You can go to sites like apmex.com and jmbullion.com to compare the sell prices for the same year and condition as yours. That will give you an idea of your maximum current value and know a price to individuals will be somewhere below those prices. Or somewhere between those site's sell prices and buy prices if published on the site. Make sure you make the distinction between BU and Proof, if they are graded, or if with box and coa, etc. as the prices can be significantly different. Yes there are very realistic chinese fakes and they have been dumped on the US for a very long time, but most stackers are going to have an ability to reasonably check them. That said I did have a fake get past me mixed in with real ones once. And another that I caught immediately. Because of that risk and because I resell in a storefront, if I am buying from an individual I personally rarely pay spot or above unless they are graded coins and less if it is in quantity. And I don't buy ungraded rare coins or years at all from individuals. So yes, the chinese knockoffs do effect the resell prices to individuals IMHO.

How can you spot a fake as an average guy, is there something to look for?

Thickness, diameter, number and shape of reeded grooves. Relation of front to back. Rare earth magnet test and reaction on a rare earth magnet slide. Ping test when dropped on hard surface. Weight in correct range. Correct font and size for year and mint mark. Lots of youtube videos and website that explain them and it helps to have a known real one of what your buying in hand to compare too. So one does need some inexpensive basic tools, but if your buying a lot of silver coins from individuals it would be wise to have.

I thought so as well. Until I bought one of the silver eagle knockoffs and Morgan dollar knockoffs on WISH a couple years ago. Holding a real one and the knockoff i could not tell which was which. Both gave off the silver ping when dropped on a table. I used to buy a large amount of silver , eagles, Morgan and junk silver. Bought a ton here on THF and TFF. . I haven't bought any since then.

I did pick this up many years ago in Mogadishu, Somalia many years ago...I know its fake bet yet unique. The only souvenir I brought back from that chit hole vacation spot. It does have that very distinct silver "ping" to it. I use it as a golf ball marker now.
