I was at my lease last weekend getting some things ready and sat in my stand for some morning and evening hunts. I captured a couple of jack rabbits hanging around each other, eating, rolling in the dirt and grooming themselves.

up They are cool critters. No shooting them on my place. They act like pets around the house.

I had them and tons of quail. I got fire ants and both were all gone in a couple of years.

The rabbits cycle through die-offs a lot, IMO. We've had years where there was one under every bush, then a couple of years later you couldn't find one for $500, and then they're back.

Silly things fun to watch but have to thin the ranks when they get out of hand….my aunts ranch near Lampasas gets overrun with them….like a swarm of vacuum cleaners when the feeders go off…

Used to carry my single shot 22 on the tractor when I was a Muleshoe area farm kid. Shot a lot of them. They ate crops so were considered pests.

I had some on my place at Bowie quite a few years ago but they and the cottontails have all disappeared.

During a dry spell they will ruin a cotton crop. They will cut the cotton off at top of ground and suck the moisture out of stalk and root. And when they do this, they will generally go across rows instead of down rows for some reason. Leaving a trail of dead plant across rows. I think they don't feel safe travelling up and down rows because they are exposed. They will also eat all the squares or bolls off of plant.

We used to dirt bike and chase them in large pastures and run them till they could not run anymore. Had a friend thought he would be cool and jump off of cycle and grab one. He fell on top of Jack and it started kicking and squealing. The rabbit clawed him bad in the left arm and hit a artery. It was bleeding bad and shooting out blood. We tore up shirts and tightly wrapped and slowed bleeding till we could get him to hospital. Dr. said he had a 1 inch cut in artery and had to give him blood transfusion. We had to go back and get his bike from pasture. We killed another Jack rabbit and made a head mount that we tied on handlebars, LOL

You can hear some pretty running when hounds get after one.

Uprisings started or quelled, tornadoes rerouted, elections rigged.

This has been since 1988. That's quite a cycle.

They yard up for winter up here. Had some friends come up to pronghorn hunt years back and the ranch we hunted had a jackrabbit wintering area, hundreds of them in a small area. The rancher said shoot all you want.
We have white tailed jackrabbits, they make good trapping bait.

Use to see those everywhere, but no longer. Good pics.

I used to watch them when growing up or visiting Lubbock. Neat critters. I guess I just don't hunt west far enough. In Young County we have cottontails but I've never seen a Jack rabbit there.
