Full moon is the 10th which is opening day. Bluewing teal is one of the only species of waterfowl The migrates by moon phase, not weather as a main driver.

Have not seen a buildup yet, just a few groups here and there.

In north Texas I have spotted some birds in Van Zandt, Collin and that’s about it. A few groups here and there at sunrise, Not many on sheet/ shallow water. The second and final weekend should be better, but scouting for a couple of limits of birds tends to be somewhat useless. Here today gone tomorrow. North Dakota is covered up, apparently about 35% more Blue wing van 2019 survey.

Slim picking on our places. Our main place is pretty much dry in North Texas. My place around Rockwall is full of water and not one Teal sighting.... Missed the X everytime on the rain. Last year we got 60 opening day. This year looks like zero.

I have teal hunted every open morning since 2006, and every time had at least 1 group buzz my spread. I say get out there, the duck gods will at least tease you with at least 1 fly-bye, probably when you are pouring your coffee or taking a piss, they do have a sick sense of humor.

well I hope they start flying, because after years of not duck hunting I booked a teal hunt on Eagle lake for the 16th!

I'm waiting for a guide I called, said he would put together a group of individules (3) and guide for teal during the week. Hope it works out.

Not sure about the moon phase statement. I have seen lots of migration happen with full moons during seasons. So much so, I have seen full migrations of geese go into corn fields and feed in the middle of the night during clear nights and full moons. On the flip side of this, I have also seen geese come out hours before sunrise to feed on clear night and full moons to feed. Nothing more frustrating than being in a field at 4 am setting full bodies and geese are already showing up in a spread. Not a fan of full moon phases when there is a lack of weather or cloud cover.

I have always thought, if the conditions were right (and it was legal) you could shoot limits in the middle of the night because I have seen this happen so many times will mallard and canadian geese.

I've been seeing good numbers around Eagle Lake down to Markham. Should be a solid hunt next week. I can give a true update tomorrow and Sunday

Typical scouting this week for North TX. Did all the math, figured out where all the freshly flooded flats would be... but it wasn't the right kind of vegetation. Didn't see a single teal.

I'll prolly end up in OK this weekend.

Relatively weak cold front (temperature wise) Saturday night into Sunday morning, but looks like it’ll bring some clouds and a good north wind.

with a full moon y'all better just park your rigs in the Windstar parking lot lots and stroll in and place your bets. Even if you found the mother load TODAY them sumditches will be long gone by shooting time tomorrow morning. Unless I was on the coast a full moon and teal is a waste of time.

I had 22 here a few days ago.

I’m new to teal & waterfowl in general, they’re gonna stop somewhere during the day, right? Does it make sense to just sit tight if I’m near a normal afternoon loafing area?
If I don’t see a big morning flight does that mean I won’t see any birds show up before noon?

Being in north Tx your teal hunting is gonna be a little different than on the coastal plain. More movement & less birds. Not to say you won't be covered ,but the little I have experienced in our area where we bought our place(young county) definitely a lot more hit & miss. I do most of my hunting on the coast or fields not far from it. Most of the action is the 1st hour or so ,but I have killed plenty of birds by sitting by the ponds till 10:30 or so. I love being out chasing teal ,so I would rather sit by the pond than in town.

Early Teal is my favorite season of all & will be starting my 16 day run in the morning.

Saw a few hundred today. Good hunt but we were on the x. Lake was pretty quiet

Plenty of teal to shoot at down here on the Texas coast this morning. Unfortunately the spot I setup on had basically no water. Dekes were sitting on a mud flat lol. Lots of shooting around us though!

I and hunting partners have killed teal opening day of early teal when I hunted with BHC...they had properties spread along the coast...any fresh/brackish water especially "sheet water" will have teal on it, near the coast from mid August on...and then fully plumed breeding birds will show mid to late December as they head back North...not sure where you mean Hville

Hunted Hall's Bayou Ranch in Santa Fe Texas, this morning's opener.



Set out about 40 decoys and three spinners.



Once the sun came up, it got hot quick, no breeze and few clouds. Where we sat was facing directly into the sun, but at least the birds were mostly coming toward us rather than from behind.



Birds were flying high. Action stopped about 8 AM. We got 10, but should have got quite a few more.

We had them at both places- few larger flocks (large for N TX) 20+ 2 decent hunts 2 guns- should ramp up as the migration ramps up. We were done by 7:15 Am both days, 7 birds each day, second day I hunted with first time hunter for teal- wiffed on 1 group completely. 10 yards deep. Birds were so close, I shot my wad (hahaha) thru a ducks back. NOTHING moving after 7 or so. Fast and furious.

It was very slow in the coastal rice paddies I was in compared to last year. And it wasn't just my location, hardly saw any flocks anywhere on the horizon either. Last year it sounded like Gettysburg. Hopefully more show up soon. Didn't see any Canadas but I did see a lot of Roseate Spoonbills which was cool, maybe I should just focus on wildlife photography next time.
