Moving day schedule:

3 a.m.: Work starts at San Jacinto
6 to 7:30 a.m.: Battleship Texas gets underway and enters the Houston Ship Channel.
11 a.m. to 12 p.m.: Battleship Texas will cross under the Fred Hartman Bridge and enter the bay.
2 to 3 p.m.: Battleship Texas will pass near the Texas City Dike.
3 to 4 p.m.: Battleship Texas will enter the Galveston Ship Channel.
4 to 5 p.m.: Battleship Texas will arrive at Gulf Copper Galveston.
Late August 31 to September 1: Battleship Texas will be maneuvered onto the dry dock and lifted out of the water.



USS Texas (BB-35) is a museum ship and former United States Navy New York-class battleship. She was launched on 18 May 1912 and commissioned on 12 March 1914.[7][8]

Texas saw action in Mexican waters following the "Tampico Incident" and made numerous sorties into the North Sea during World War I. In World War II, Texas escorted war convoys across the Atlantic and later shelled Axis-held beaches for the North African campaign and the Normandy Landings before being transferred to the Pacific Theater late in 1944 to provide naval gunfire support during the Battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Texas was decommissioned in 1948, having earned a total of five battle stars for service in World War II. It is a (currently closed) museum ship near Houston, Texas.

Texas was also a technological testbed: the first US battleship to mount anti-aircraft guns, the first US ship to control gunfire with directors and range-keepers, the first US battleship to launch an aircraft,[9][10] and one of the first US Navy ships to receive production radar.[A 1]

Texas was the first US battleship to become a permanent museum ship,[A 2][9] the first battleship declared to be a US National Historic Landmark,[A 3][unreliable source?] and is the only remaining World War I era dreadnought battleship. She is also one of the eight remaining ships and the only remaining capital ship to have served in both World Wars.[11][A 4]

When some of the wood was replaced on it, they made knives from the original decking. This is in my pocket every day.

She is also the world's last remaining dreadnaught battleship, technically she's a super dreadnaught. Her kind once ruled the seas, now she's the last one. It's fitting that once she was stricken from the US Navy's list she was commissioned as the Texas Navy's flagship. She should be kept in proper condition. I know it isn't in the cards but I wish instead of Galveston or Beaumont they'd put her next to the Lexington. That would be so cool.

That's right she's WWI vintage. Her class was improved and advanced for the time.

Yes. After WW1 she became the first ship to use director fire control - analog ancestor to computers. She was also amoung the first US Navy ships to receive radar.

I read for years there was no money to fix her. Evidently they found the money. Can't let this piece of history go to scrap!

And for ballistic needs such as myself, Outdoor Life magazine claimed the 16" guns were the same as a scaled up .308 Win rifle. Powder charge, projectile weight ratio, chamber pressure.

The historic ships are definitely worth preserving. Too bad U.S.S. Enterprise (CV-6) was scrapped. It had more battles stars than any U.S. ship, ever. The Big E deserved much better than what she got.

It's like an old faithful war horse that someone allowed to be killed for dog food. They should be honored, not discarded.
