......is a term I’ve used all my life. I’m an older vatto and it’s just something I grew up hearing and have always used.
Nowadays I truly believe many have no idea wth it means.
Today a nice prob mid 30s gal with a youngun says...”here I’ll get that for you sir”... as I was pushing basket to the rack in grocery store parking lot. I replied...much obliged young lady. She stops, turns around with an angry scowl and says “ WTF you mean by that”? I laughed and said it’s just and old way of expressing gratitude....she waves me off and says...”whatever” and holds her hand in the air. Lol
It’s cool...I’ll keep saying it especially if I think it may irritate some. It’s an old thing I guess.

I’m 32, have used and have heard the expression. Maybe it has to do with the way people were raised in said area. You definitely hear it more with people that have a stronger euro mindset and raising.

I would have asked if she kisses her mother with that mouth. What an idiot.

I've heard it my whole life but it's not a phrase I use, however, if that's the response I can expect, I'm going to start using it just for fun!

Are you sure that's what got her, not the "young lady" part?

What really got me was the wtf but also the hand thing. She put it towards me with an open palm waving.it saying “whatever”....The only other time that’s been done to me was by one of my twin daughters when she was 13yo. My girls are now 42....we were having a rather heated discussion and girl child put that open palm to me and said....talk to the hand cause the mind don’t give a dayum. I slapped her face off. The one and only time I ever hit either of my girls.
Anyway I thought I’d share that because I had a brief flashback to 29yrs ago with the hand thing but was well aware I couldn’t slap this beeotch today Lol

I don’t think anyone questioned the gender.
It is which term she was offended by that you
may not have correct. Just an observation. Who knows🤷🏻‍♂️

One of the biggest problems with today's youth is that too many of them think they're peers with everyone else. No respect for elders, or anyone else for that matter. Everyone's an online presence. I get it all the time with the young people I work with. Well, I've been in this organization longer than you've been alive, kid. You're not my peer.

This is why so many of them have trouble transitioning from kid to adult. They enter the workforce and only then do they realize they're the low turd on the totem pole. Many of them cannot handle it.

I use "much obliged" all the time, even in emails. Keep on keeping on, sir. up

What onEarth could possibly be wrong with that phrase? If you had said, “Bless your heart.”, I could understand.

Heard the phrase all my life but I would have had to play along. “PC way to say I’d hit it” and winked at her.

"Much obliged" confused2

How can even the dumbest of the dumb misinterpret that as an insult, even if she'd never heard that before.

It would be no different than interacting with someone in the 1700s, 1800s, heck even the later part of 1900s. Its not a commonly used phrase anymore. Just follow the age old rule “know your audience”. One thing Ive found in working with younger folks is that they get straight to the point, no fluff. If they are thanking someone, they just say “thank you” or “thx” or a thumbs up emojii. I hate the emojii responses but thats what resonates so I speak their language occasionally so Im not constantly seen as the old fart.

How could you possibly be more to the point uttering two words? Doesn’t much obliged still mean much obliged?

I like the phrase plain & simple and you can’t be any more on point than much obliged. Am I missing something here?
