This guy was napping in a cedar tree I cut down a few days ago. I let him go about his day. ![[Linked Image]](https://texashuntingforum.com/forum/pics/userpics/2022/08/full-63244-359792-img_2041.jpg)

Going by the checkered tail wrapped underneath, I think it is a racer. Would have been a slope-shouldered rattle headed Texas heart attack death adder, if it fell on you, while cutting down the tree tho!!!

Racer. Look at the smooth scales.
Dark versions of Rat Snake besides having weakly 'keeled' scales almost always display some red or orange speckling in a pattern on the sides if observed closely..
Dark Rat Snakes are always shiny (unless getting ready to shed) and racers will have a 'matte' appearance to their respective color.

Why I asked location. Thought it could be an eastern rat, no red or orange like Texas ratsā¦. ![[Linked Image]](https://texashuntingforum.com/forum/pics/userpics/2022/08/full-25921-359830-ed9789d7_0378_4bd8_bc55_b31609215790.png) ![[Linked Image]](https://texashuntingforum.com/forum/pics/userpics/2022/08/full-25921-359831-ddcb8361_7138_4750_9174_fc574cfdf4c5.jpeg)

A Blue Racer got in my shop, while it was under construction. We went back and forth a bit, with me trying to get him to move somewhere else. On open ground I could not believe how fast he could travel! I know how they got the "racer" name. And he sure was purdy, but I wasn't going to share my shop with him.

Black Mamba. 100% the only correct answer.

Black Racer.. great snake to have around. Why? Do they eat other snakes? On occasion they will eat other snakes, but don't normally 'target' them. Racers will pretty much consume anything they can overpower....but a large part of their diets (depending on location) are mice, insects, frogs, lizards, etc.....

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

They eat other snakes because they taste like chicken . I thought all black racers took off like a shot when you got near then. Hence the "racer" Rattlesnakes: hopefully they rattle so you know they're there. Rat snake - could be. The Texas Parks mag had a thing on a variant of coral- all black- I would never had know it was a coral but only around Houston I think. Indigo I thought had a slight blue/hence the name. They are more beautiful. If a snake can be beautiful. A few years back I was moving along a trail and there was this little rattlesnake, all curled up- didn't know I was there so I was watching it and it yawned. No kidding, and tucked it's little head under its body and went to sleep. First time I thought a rattlesnake was cute.

They 'can' be black on occasion....but you are correct. They are 'named' for their interior mouth coloring.
