Sitting here in the den minding my own business, when the back camera had pictures, and there was fine shooting light. I called em up and it was a large batch of hogs of all sizes at the feeder. I grabbed my gear and headed for the back, where I had a Bog Pod and a chair set up just for this. I had visions of dealing death to a bunch of them. When I got there, my Big Pod and chair were under a large dead oak limb - it fell right square on top of my stuff. Hogs were still in the open, but I couldn’t budge the big limb. Today, of all days. Why me? But…tomorrow…

Always look up! Son parked his Blazer under a dead limb at then girlfriend's house. Considerable roof alteration. I told him to always look up and that it was his sign...

Imagine if you would have *just* beat that widowmaker to your spot. You may be more lucky then you know!

Yep! I'd call this situation unfreaking believable good luck! All about perspective.

Well…yep, I guess it could be good luck. As for the trap, it was not set last night. I’ll be in the stand this evening.

I guess I’ll cut up that limb this morning. That was the only limb down in that whole area, and it fell ‘perzactly’ on my chair and Bog Pod. Geez…

I took the little Stihl battery chainsaw back there and cleaned the spot up and reset the tripod and chair. Was looking forward to this evening, but the wife called the Grandson (with the 6.5 Grendel AR) and he begged me to not shoot up the hogs. He’ll get after em on Friday evening. Well, heck, he is my fav grandson, so I guess I’ll just drink wine this evening. You grandpas would do the same…

That limb was about 6” thick at the big end, but when it fell, it hit some cedars. That flipped the limb and just the lighter end hit my stuff. The heavy end, had it hit, would have crushed my tripod, and me, if It had hit when I was there.

I dragged the chair and tripod from under the limbs before I took this picture.

If you are talking about the tripod, that’s not where he’ll (or I’ll) usually be hunting. The tripod is 250 yards from the feeder. The enclosed blind is 150 from the feeder. The tripod is only for when the hogs are out around the feeder and I can’t get to the blind. And yes, I’ll add some cover for the tripod.

I'm a little cautious around widow makers, try to pay attention to them. A friends best friend was killed by a limb like that but a little bigger. Was driving his truck in town, stopped at a stop sign when that limb fell. Smashed his side of the cab and killed him.

I knew that dead tree was there, but thought it was far enough away to not worry about. Apparently the limb fell, bounced off the cedars, and did a forward flip to my spot. What are the odds? If not for that, I’d have had a fat hog. Only a 250 yard shot in fading light and a slightly fogged scope. Any caveman could do that.

Glad your stuff was good.

You could have laughed with God and gone prone with the limb as a rest, or used one of the trees/poles, etc. in the area as a rest and taken out a couple of the hogs.

Well, I would have done exactly like you suggested, but the hogs had wandered out of sight. But they are back. That GS better get his tail here soon. My trigger finger is having spasms right now.

My grandson is a busy man and hasn't been able to visit in a couple years. He had never seen or killed a wild hog so I jumped at the chance to get him out to see if we could get him on some while he was here a couple weeks ago. Well, it worked out great and he was able to kill a trophy for his first hog ever and then put a hurt on a sounder by getting 5 shoats. I think he is hooked now.

I’ve been lucky several times. Some years back, I decided to drag some cedar tree tops out of the woods and burn them. I put a chain on one and started dragging with the tractor. What I didn’t see was that the tree top jammed against a dead oak about 9” in diameter. I pulled it right over on me. The ROPS saved my life. It hit the ROPS and snapped, with part of it whacking me in the side of my head. I was out for a bit, I think. The liquid running down my neck was sweat, not blood. Would’ve killed me for sure if not for the ROPS. Too close…
