I got a call yesterday from a school I taught at 12 years ago and they need a Physics teacher for a couple of weeks to start the school year. Their "new hire" teacher is out of country and can't be there for ten days or so and they called me to be a sub until the new hire person gets back. Going in today to talk to the principal and see how it fits.

I would rather stay at home and watch reruns of The View.

A retired machinist was called into his old company to fix a problem…..he looked the machine over, turned a knob 1/4 turn and the machine operated flawlessly. When asked, he presented them with an invoice for $1,000. The manager was flabbergasted and asked for an itemized invoice, so the machinist gave him one.

Turning knob: $25

Knowing which knob to turn: $975

Just sayin’ Coach…..

LOL it is not as if I was headed to a firing squad. It will probably be only nine days and those are easy. Day one--Attendance, class rules and an assessment test to see where I need to start. Days 2-9 will be the basics of scientific method procedures, labs procedures, and measurements in the metric system. I have already prepared power points, handouts, labs and lessons plans when I walk in today. Easy Breezy.

You nailed it Chris.

This made my laugh. My wife is on day 8 of a 4 week maternity leave sub for a 4th grade teacher. Thursday was the first day of kids, today will be the testing to see where they are.
Luckily I have never been hungry enough to try and be a teacher. It takes a special mentality to be one, and I don't have it.
Goo luck spacejunkie.

I was an assistant band director for 3 years, right out of college. I was bad at it. I'd like to think I'd have more patience with the kids nowadays, at my "mature" age, but I probably would actually be worse.

You are a better man than me!
Wife is starting her 29th year right now and I can straight up say I wouldn't do that job for 10X the pay they get and the other job I feel this way about right now in this country is any LEO job!
The lack of respect each are shown would cause me to do something I'd get locked up for a good amount of time!!

Good on you man. Hope it goes good for you

I was a band director for 33 years. Retired five years ago. I got bored and have been teaching band part time the past three years. Great gig. Home by one each day.

Well It was not what I thought. New teacher changed their mind soooo I will be there until the position is filled. Not what I expected but will still do it to help them out. They were good to me for a lot of years so it is my time to take care of them.

You are indeed a good man

To this day my daughter still holds her band director she had at Steele HS in very, very high regards. She was a tough lady and demanded the best out of her kids but was very good to them......especially those kids that gave max effort

Yup.

Some teachers really can have a major positive impact on a child, that carries on into adulthood well after public school. I hope it is more frequent than I belive it is.

I still have memories of several top notch ones. A long list of mediocre ones, and a sizeable list of really bad ones.

I’m a teacher myself, and I can honestly say that things are extremely dire right now. Last week my district hired 500 “teachers”. Many of them are uncertified, and they’re placing them as long-term subs and paying for them to take certification courses. I’ll also add that we are a big district, but not one of the really big ones (Dallas, FTW, etc). Teachers are fleeing the profession like no one has ever seen.

All this being said, I love my job. Helping a kid that’s been dealt a terrible hand is unbelievable rewarding.

$100k to $200k in student loan debt, for a job that starts out at under $45k a year.

A "system" that ties the hands of teachers, hears their problems, but does not listen to their solutions. No doubt micromanagement involved. Schools with security as an afterthought. Students with no discipline at home and they bring that mentality to the school. Teachers unable to discipline and in fear for their own physical safety.

Yeah, no wonder the qualified ones are fleeing...

Calculus? You are a genius sir. I could've never passed your class. 30 years in corporate America too... zero math skills.

Thanks for teaching our kiddos!

45k????
I taught and coached 3 sports for 35k. They making big money now! I lasted 2 years. Couldn't handle the classroom. Well, looking back, I couldn't handle being inside and being still regardless of the job. I do miss coaching. Spacejunkie, glad there are folks like you that are still willing to do it. Good luck!

Luckily there are still some people that I highly respect, doing wonderful work for that pocket change. I agree with you that the system is broken. Our teachers start out at a little more than that, but it’s still not enough. I’m hoping that the current mass exodus will shake the system a little.

The real problem is one that can’t be fixed by legislation, or policy, or even corporal punishment. When the family unit breaks down and God is left out of the equation, you can only slow down the inevitable.
