I know planting food plots is a major tactic that many do to kill deer. I have even done it myself in the past. But who all just mows shooting lanes through the woods or mows power lines and hunts the shooting lanes? No food plots planted just shunt shooting lanes?

I’m in the pineywoods and haven’t planted anything yet. Had plenty of doe come out to gravity feeders on some trimmed up lanes. The guy that’s been on the lease the longest (going on 40 years) and always gets the biggest bucks plants and swears by it. I’m planting on a couple lanes this year but also going to spend more time inside the woods looking for bucks this year

With this drought, nearly everyone. They might have planted but the poor plot is gone.

Drought? What Drought?? smirk

Man, I'd love to send you guys some of the rain we've been getting at our pine tree plantation lease here in S.E. Louisiana. Our roads are so sloppy from daily rain that you can't even drive them with an ATV. Last Saturday we wanted to bush hog a few plots but the roads were too soft for the tractor. One of the guys decided his 4-wheel drive Mule would make it down the main road. Wrong. Took us over an hour to retrieve it.

5" in San Antonio for the year and there are places around with less. Driest 1st half of the year ever on record in SA.
Hottest May, hottest June, & 2nd hottest July ever recorded in SA with 29 of 31 days of 100+.

Be thankful for the rains you've gotten and that you have to worry about getting stuck in mud because the only damn place you will get stuck in mud now is in the bottom of a stock tank that has dried up!

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

right now in most of Texas, the only thing mowing will get you is a grass fire! flame

East Texas is very different than south Texas. I’m in the Pineywoods as well and you’ll be fine chasing doe on hunting lanes. Gravity feeders work really well for me for doe, as long as they know they’re there

Our spring plots didn't make it thru June this year. Just too dang dry.

We will put in oats this fall, maybe some winter peas if it looks like we'll get the moisture to support them. It's just a good bit of expense with seed, fertilizer, and lime only to watch it all die from drought. Oats are cheap, will grow about anywhere, and can be reseeded easily if necessary.

We are somewhat obligated to try plots spring and fall with the wildlife tax exemption we have. Feeding protein has been a never-ending battle this year. The deer are not straying far from the protein pen.

But yes, just mowing to give them fresh growth to browse works better than not doing anything at all

I'm with ya. We're in the middle of monsoon season here...we've probably received 20" in the last three days. Wish I could push some to my Texas friends and the ranchito.

LanceH, during the rut the bucks will be chasing the does. If you have an area that is frequented by a lot of does, the bucks will show up.
If you have mowed high line right-of-ways, get a hand seeder and spread out a couple bags of Throw & Grow.

If you are operating small scale.....this fall go to the grocery store and buy a few bags of peas and throw them out.

They don’t get out of the woods, so you don’t gotta get in there and get’em wink

I hunt in Marion and Cass county in east TX and food plots are the way to go. We use feeders as well and the deer will hit them occasionally but we see many deer more in the food plots. Feeders attract pigs and they deer don't like being around pigs. Our biggest challenge with the deer is their becoming nocturnal, especially the big bucks. Our only chance of seeing a big one is during the rut sometime from opening day of rifle season to Thanksgiving.

Thanks, I will try this.
