Crapp'n SOB's. I have had them camp out in my driveway making it impossible to avoid their droppings if you walk or drive through.

Here during their molting period, when they are getting new flight feathers, they are grounded and walk everywhere.

These locals walk from my pond, through my yard, 760 yards to the neighbors pond.

Hopefully the predators will thin their numbers.

In September there is a resident goose season. You pound on them one time that family unit will likely move on

That would be some tough jerky I would think. I tried to cook one like I steak, it was so tough I could not even eat it. I passed on many last year, cannot be bothered shooting them, my dog hates them too.. I let my son cook some I shot once, he cooked them down in a crock pot "chili" spice, we made tacos it was pretty good that way.

Ones I killed in Maryland eat like choice ribsteaks. When cooked that way.

Those guys did everything with them from Jerky, corned, salami etc. Was all great

I took same methodology to my panhandle geese. Marinate, cook to Lt med rare. Same thing excellent

My skills with honkers end at jerky. But, when I'm done you'd never know it isn't beef... so I believe it's possible to make good steaks.

Guy, the key is to marinade the heck out of them after you cut them into 1/8" slices. Dry the excess, cayenne and black pepper, then dehydrate them till they start looking the right color. Finish with an hour on the smoker. Don't smoke them first, they'll get bitter if they're on there wet. That reminds me, I still got a bag in the freezer.

Guy, did you overcook them or something? Rare to medium rare and those geese are excellent eating. Very beef like. I love em!

No, did not over cook, cooked it camping over open flame, skin on. Maybe I got one that just flew down the flyaway and was muscular vs a resident fatty.. roflmao

I only tried eating one like a steak that one time. Its possible it needed to be more rare.. I tried to find the pic, but couldn't find it. I remember it looked good.

Got them all over the golf course out here. They tried coyote decoys; all the geese did was carp on them. BIG turds with white chit in them

You guys got me wanting to shoot another one. But as I mentioned above, my dog does not like to fetch them. My dog has been forced fetch, but she is one stubborn girl. So I force fetched her, with the help from a pro, but on her first hunt, I drop a monster Canada. I forced fetch her and trained her with ducks, but not geese. So I send her to fetch it, she goes after it, and tires to pick it up, barking at it, etc..But would not pick it up. So I try and force her, and that did not work out, and here is the deal with my girl, she does not forget stuff. I basically ruined my dog on fetching Canada's, she was very difficult to FF, but I blame myself for this.

Well I froze the bird, and did more FF training with her on the goose, and made posts about this, maybe you guys remember. I remember Smokey Bear posting on that thread. Well I got her fetching a frozen one fine, but thawed out one (harder to pick up), she would play games, she is very manipulative. Me trying to FF her on the bird nearly broke my back, she would wear me out. Mean while, I'm talking to my trainer he is saying "Guy, don't let her get away with this". I tell him, man she is killing, finally I say screw it, I drop her off at the pro's house, here is the frozen goose, you FF her on the bird.

He call me up next day, "Man Guy, I see what you are saying now." roflmao

He actually gets her fetching the thawed out bird, but she did not like it, and regressed to being forced again, I gave up. This is not a goose dog. And it is funny, when one flies over, she looks at me like "Don't shoot it". If I ever shoot one, I will not send my dog, I will make her watch me fetch it.

I think her only cure is to do a Canada hunt with another dog, and make my dog watch the other dog fetch them, this would drive her crazy and she might fetch one.

That’s wild never heard of a dog acting like that. But they are all different. My last lab was the laziest lab ive ever seen. She would literally be woken up by the shotguns firing. Old trainer friend of mine tried to use the little stick to thump her on the tail to get her moving at a duck quicker. After a few attempts he said nope you’ll break her spirit before you get her moving quickly.

This year I put my little 40lb lab on Sandhills. She acted a little quirky when she got to the 1st one. I said fetch and she brought back. After that no problem.was glad she was forced. She did refuse the one that stood up on her though. She was like nope you gotta do your part 1st dude.

My golden wont fetch geese, she swims out to them, swims a circle around them growling at them, then swims back to me. I'll send her again and she does the same thing. I dont shoot enough geese to worry about it. I did get her to retrieve one last year though.

Don’t be so sure Guy. Probably gimping one that she can show who is boss would put some fire in her belly. Expect some barking and carrying on. Finding the handle in the water and meeting her at the bank where she does not have to get it up off the ground will help her confidence. Sometimes less is more. I remember Tara from when we met at stinkbellies for a de-snaking clinic. I like dogs better than most people.. I think you, Stinkbelly, and Wayne are the only forum members that have seen my dog.

I have always thought that. I think she would bring it back on water just fine, but then she would break rules on holding, and this just kinda scares me..

Been there Guy, don't worry about it. large geese, when not completely killed at the shot, which is also rare as MOST hunters will shoot geese out of range (sky busting) and cripple it. A cripple goose will peck the crap out of a dog when it tries to pick it up. Not good

I've never seen a rubber dummy peck back force fetch trained or not. So, this experience is hard on a dog. Most dogs who will fight through it are daily hunted (Guides Dogs) and get used to it over and over.

My Vizsla Blaze was an amazon and could pick up, push, or drag resident geese with brute force and did not always follow or need to follow what I trained her for picking up geese, but what I did with her is go out to her on some of the first ones and encourage her to get a hold at the point of the shoulder/wing area. As long as she was in that wing junction to neck it would make it many times easier for her. Ross and Cacklers are about the same as a big duck and no big deal, but those big magnum Canadas tend to fall onto their back or float on their back. Then the dog is tempted to grab onto that big breast sticking up. Hard to get a bite and the dog ends up dropping it with a mouth full of feathers. Learning from Blaze I did the same with my Vizsla Dash from day one and he figured it out right away. My dogs could tackle geese without a problem when I let them, but they both were used at my side as catch dogs Turkey hunting, and both retrieved a lot of geese during their lifetimes so it was just another day at the office for them. I'll try and dig up a couple pictures to show what I am talking about on the location on a goose where I would show the dogs to pick them up at. Simple repetition of making them drop on the wrong hold and pointing out the right location to then take the new hold was all it took.

First one is Blaze and you can see she picked it up right where the wing meets the body. The next one is Dash and by grabbing on the base of the wing he is able to pick up that big Kansas Canada up off the ice to carry it in.

Now if you don't have a trained dog to send them with to learn by watching, sometimes to show them how to do it you will just have to improvise.

Y'all are cray. Geese eat 100x better than ducks. I will gladly take everyone's geese.

I think I was the only one that said I didn't like them, that was based one time trying to cook them they did not turn our right. I might try and shoot some during early teal season.
