Since I am eventually planning on acquiring a V6 Twin Turbo Tundra, I thought I’d ask who among us has a Ford engine like that, and what amount of miles are on it. That’s info I don’t remember seeing.

Does the Ford engine hold up over time?

Most people seem to like them. I have one that’s been okay. 170,000 miles. Replaced one turbo. I think that was about $2,500.

Not a fan of the turbo and that's why.
You end up with an eight year old truck that needs a $3200 turbo.

I think it's better to equip the truck with an engine that can stand on it's own.
The 5.7 I-Force was the best engine Toyota ever built.

Expedition with the eco boost. At 76,000 miles it developed a turbo coolant line leak and water pump leak. $2800 repair. Always had a V8 in our 3 other expeditions. Took the last one to 200k. Should have just replaced the motor.

so, for those that have them, is there a huge difference between the 2.7 and the 3.5?

My 2017 3.5L F150 has been great but only 72,000 on it so far.

I cannot remember hearing someone say wish I'd gotten a smaller engine.

To be determined

Toyota tried turbos on their V8s in the Tundra before. Trannys and rear ends didn't do so well.

I'm on my 2nd F150 3.5 ecoboost, so far no problems.

My brother has a 2016 F150 extended cab 4 wheel drive 2.7. He gets about 21 MPG. Often pulls a 16 foot tandem. Plenty of power. He blew a turbo at 100,000 miles.

I have a 2015 super crew 3.5. About 500 pounds of tools and supplies. 70,000 miles. No issues. About 19 MPG. Plenty of power.

Both get 1 or 2 better MPG on highway at 65 or 70 MPH.

Ford Eco Booste engines are direct fuel injectioned. The fuel is injected directly in cylinders rather before intake valves. This should lead to longer life engines. I am not familiar with the Toy fuel system.

The 3.5 Has more horsepower and more torque, but the 2.7 is much lighter. So for a drag strip comparison, they are essentially the same. The 3.5 has a much higher tow rating, but, the 2.7 4x4 with 3.73 (special order) gears still has a tow rating of 8800 lbs.

I have a 2017 2.7 with about 107,000 miles. I just replaced the spark plugs, and I change the oil every 7,000 -8,000 miles. Other than that, I've done nothing to it. Last truck I had (2004 5.4 Triton), I had to rebuild the entire timing system at 175,000 miles, and a lot of people had issues with the VCT system very early on. V8's are not immune to having major issues either.

Same, but 189K on mine. This 3.5L will run circles around every gas V8 I’ve ever owned.

They are a completely different platform. The 2.7 is not just a downsized 3.5.

On my 4th with no issues. Granted the first was totaled early in. Current is a 2020 with 51,000 miles.

I loved my 3.5 ecoboost and have kicked myself the last 4 years for selling it. Only had around 70k miles on it, but never had a single issue with anything. Finally placed an order for another one the end of March and just got word today it has completed production and is on ramp 51 ready to be shipped. Says ETA is Aug 9, but I bet it takes longer than that to get here. Man I can’t wait!

Not a V6 or a V8.

I've had 4 different ones that I've put 132k miles (total not each) on...early on they had a condensation issue in the intercooler and my 2012 had that issue...otherwise, not a single one has been in the shop for anything.

All of those were 3.5's and there is a noticeable difference when a trailer is hooked up to them, between it and the 2.7...that's why I've always had the 3.5's. I don't have one now, but I'd own another without any reservations but as you can tell I don't keep vehicles long but I'd buy one with 100k miles on it and drive it another 50k without concern.

I have 2, a F150 and a Taurus SHO. Both 3.5 and have been very reliable, 75k on one and 90k on the other.

I order a new company truck every year (F150 Lariat) I'm on my 7th one now. After a couple of 5.0s I will NEVER go back. Ride/drive is waaay better than traditional V8, the Ecoboost just acts like it wants to go vs the V8 where you are making it go.

Why did the classic inline 6 fall so far out of favor?

Think about the old Ford 300 I-6, can't kill em.

Only straight 6 built in the last 20 years I aware of the the Cummins diesel. I remember in the late 90's I took a co-worker's Jeep with a 5 speed manual and a straight 6 a few miles to the store and back. On a gravel road as soon as I left and I damn near ended up in a fence, that thing had so much torque!

Seems like an I-6, with a turbo, in a half ton truck would be a hell of a good combo.

603, the Toyo 3.6 is a fine engine. Some are waiting a couple years to see how they do but I would have no problem buying on. I am looking at new trucks also and really like the Tundra.

I figure that if the Ford engine is durable, the Toyota engine will be better. That’s my reasoning for asking about the ford engine.
