Do you know anyone who has a lumber mill and wants cedar trees? I don't know how far they would come but I'm 20 minutes east of Durant.

I'm looking for the same near Chalk mountain. Free, old growth timber. Some probably 36" diameter. Lots of smaller too. Perfect fence posts. At this point I'll pay someone to take them. Seriously.

It all comes down to the size of the trees wether or not anyone is interested in bringing in big equipment to harvest them. If it’s mostly 3-10” trees you won’t get anyone interested more than likely but their are guys that will come in and harvest the smaller ones to use in posts but you’d better be ready to spend the time/money cleaning up the mess they leave behind and that’s going to require a mulcher or some means of dealing with the stumps sticking up and all the limbs laying everywhere. Now if you have a bunch of 10” plus sized trees and have a bunch of acres then that’s another thing entirely.

We’ve came in behind both types of guys tons of times for clean up and they both end up looking great but regardless you have to be prepared to deal with the mess left behind after they finish. Let us know what size trees you have and I can point you in the right direction and give a recommendation on how to proceed.

I appreciate the info about the mess left behind. I have a long, dry creek (Kimble county) that I'd like to have hand cut 'cause I think it's too rough for machinery. But, although I admire how tough and hard those guys work, the ones I've seen look like pretty rough characters that I'm not sure I want to give free reign on my place whenever I can't be there. They're all over that country.

68rustbucket your correct about the cedar mulch not allowing grass to grow through it the first year when it’s thick but thrs an easy solution for that, it all depends on the desired finished product. This field had thousands of cedars and locusts mulched last year, if you hadn’t known they were thr you’d never know it now.

If you let someone cut it, remember that cedar stumps take forever to decompose. I cut a 18" the year I bought my property in east Texas, because it was too close to the cabin. That was 2008. I sold the property this year. I was going to remove the stump before the realtor took pictures....That stump and the roots were every bit as solid as they were in 2008.

I have some cedars but am 99% oaks. I really don’t want them but not a problem.

Yep - those cedar stumps will take 40+years to rot out! That's why real-cedar posts make such great fence-posts. Best plan on grinding stumps at least down to ground level.

I got the same issue angus1956 - too many cedars some huge (20+") that have been there for 50 years, interspersed among nice oaks that I don't want to harm.
Just be aware that any cedar branches/trees cut off/down ignite very easily and burn really hot/fast as they dry out - don't let anyone leave you with a forest full of cut&drying cedar tops!
At a minimum you can have someone with a 'bobcat forestry mulcher' come in and mulch all the smaller ones and understory on larger ones - mulching in place - pretty reasonable cost.
