Two different snakes…both dead. Was fishing and these two got way too close (different times) and at my pond i cant have venomous snakes cruising by my dock with people fishing!

Sorry not the best pic of the one in the water. It swam by with entire body on top of water…which made me think venomous. I need to learn more way to identify quicker…which i why im asking THF!

Thanks!

Water snakes are not venomous FYI (#1 picture - #2 appears to also be one)

Floating vs not floating is NOT an indicator if they're venomous or non-venomous - it's an old wive's tale.

Cottonmouths are thick bodied with a short, stubby tail. Their stomachs are checkered and not plain like the second photo.

Another good identifier is that Cottonmouths don’t have vertical lines/bars on their jaws. If you can see the head they will be very visible on watersnakes.

Good kill. Those will eat your fish. Fish are their primary diet.

If all else fails, turn the snake over and look at his blowhole. If there's a single row of scales below, the snake if venomous. A double row is non-venomous.

You want to kill it first before you try to turn it over.

Correct, though this holds true only for the rows immediately after the Anal Vent/Plate. It is possible to have double scales near the end of the tail....but as you say, single scales are a reliable diagnostic tool for our indigenous Pit Vipers (Rattlesnakes, Copperheads and Cottonmouth). Coral snake has double rows but is easily identified by its color.

Example, copperhead....single scales.
