Drove to a chili cook off outside of Telephone on July 2nd. Pretty sure I drove past a couple of those fields.

From the man who made them happen:
"The main thing I took away from this year (even more so than the past) is to have a clean seed bed. I lightly tilled the land, and applied a herbicide to knock out the early competition.
Planted the seed at a depth of 1 to 1.5 inches. In the early spring, we usually get rains, so I want them to get out of the ground quickly. I’ve seen planting depth recommendations of up to 3”, which I think is just way too deep.
The most trouble we experienced this year was rushing in and planting into established weeds. My herbicide failed and the sunflowers just couldn’t get a good start on those places.
The seed we planted does have fungicide treatment on the seed itself. Untreated seed may be getting a fungus that is inhibiting the growth.
Also, check the PH of the soil. If that plot grows good weeds and grass, it’s probably okay, but if the grass and weeds struggle, I would bet the soil is unbalanced."
glyphosate (Roundup) to take down the grass and weeds.
Seed at Nutrien Ag Solutions, in Paris. They have several locations.
The brand and variety was Dynagro 49NS19. Planted a population of 18,000 seeds per acre.
