Bow season isn’t that far away, with some species opening up in 30 or so days.

That being said, let’s perk up this section of the THF

Any subject anyone wants to talk about, any questions, etc.?

Latest I have gone into the new hunting season prep without shooting my bow yet.

I have a range set up in my back yard and typically try to sling a few arrows every evening or every other evening.

I have an archery hunt in early September so I’ll keep shooting almost daily until then

Thanks for the reminder! It cools down enough in the evening to start shooting again. So focused on other things and hiding from the heat.

What helped me is not committing to marathon range sessions, just a reasonable amount of arrows to stay fresh. Some evenings I only shoot 4-6 arrows. Rarely do I shoot more than 20 arrows with my compound set ups during a range session

Makes sense, keeping the muscles loose and the form right is a smart decision.

I'm a firm believer in the "if the first shot is off, they are all off" mantra

once you have built good form thru repetition shooting 100 arrows every time out isn't gonna help a thing if your first arrow is always off the mark. An animal isn't gonna sit there and let you shoot it 2-3 times...you have one shot and the first one better be money.

I gave up bow hunting. When I was living up in Tennessee I killed a few deer with a bow because rifle season was only one week, and I could bow hunt for several months. I got tired of walking around with a flashlight every weekend looking for other peoples wounded deer. I haven’t killed a deer with a bow since I moved back to Texas 20+ years ago. No need to. I can wait an extra month.

I don't know what year that was, but likely some time ago. Equipment has improved leaps and bounds every decade since the compound was invented and although a person can make a bad shot, a compound bow is a very effective hunting weapon.

Most of the animals I shoot with my compound bow make it less than 60 yards before expiring, and most have massive blood trails due to the wide expendable broadheads i shoot.

I would encourage anyone who hasn't tried it or gave it up long ago to give modern equipment a try.....I rarely hunt with a rifle now and never feel handicapped shooting my compound bow.

I finally shot today. Shot only 5 arrows...which is normal the first week I start shooting and at only 10 yards. My grouping was excellent so my form and execution was the same as when I last shot. My muscles that I use to draw the bow are not quite where they were when I quit but within a week or two at most they will be fine. I will shoot standing the first 2 weeks then start shooting from a sitting position for my ground blinds and by the end of the second week will be shooting at 18-20 yards. I will drop down to 3 arrows only when I shoot but might shoot twice per day somedays. I try to make my first shot count every time I shoot. That is the one that counts when hunting. This my routine that I have used for quite a while now and it works for me.

Started shooting a compound last year. Killed a whitetail and a few axis deer with it. It is fun to shoot but the longbow is in my blood, have to shoot them both just to be fair. Because in today's world everything is about being "fair" of course. grin

First time in twelve years I haven’t had a deer lease. Been bow only for the last 9. I’ll probably start practicing once it cools off in case someone offers me a doe hunt. I never have needed to shoot many arrows when practicing. My first arrow is usually the best.

Sorry to hear that. Hopefully something comes together for you.

Have you thought about trying some public ground in Oklahoma or Arkansas?

I tried it some when I was younger. Wake up at 3am drive to the woods. Get up in your tree stand before light. Only to have some idiot come walking in after light trying to spot and stalk whitetail with a bow. Just not my thing.

I like shooting my compound but feel like I’m cheating on my recurves if I shoot the wheel bow too much.

Once I get past my September hunt I’ll probably just hunt strictly with my recurve with the exception of a culling expedition I have lined up on another property. Compound is a much more effective culling tool than a trad bow

I hear that. I bought the compound to shoot axis out of a ground blind because the shots were going to be longer and it is tough shooting out of a blind with a longbow. I do like the fact that I can pickle the center of the target at 70 yds with the Mathews although real world hunting I can't see doing that on a live target that can move, unless it was a hog maybe.

Africa the first week in September and Missouri the third week in September. Couple of 3D shoots tween then and now. I shoot several times a week. Sometimes more than once a day. Building new arrows for the Africa trip. Acquiring more broadheads than I'll need but oh well. I don't have an archer season. I am an archer. Year round. It's what I do and who I am.

What kind of arrow setup are you building for Africa? Any particular game your targeting?

Practicing standing is ok but most of your shots are not going to be in that position

September 16-18 Archery hunt for velvet bucks in Mississippi on private land which I have.

October 1 regular archery season starts.

Have been taking a few shots a week just to stay in form, will get more serious with it mid to late August.

Same as I always hunt. Centershot 340s with 150 grains up front. But I got fancy this time and used wraps. Using some different fletching on some of them as well. I'll take two dozen carbon and some woodies. If it works out I'll take an Impala or two, a blue wildebeest, a gemsbok, bushbuck, couple of warthogs and . . . .
But it's hunting so it might be a bust as well.

I am working on my form and repetition of my shoot process. Getting my strength back to draw and shoot at 66 yrs old is taking longer every year. Those things are all I care about the first two weeks. My grouping has been very good for not shooting since January.
