Would you recommend the military to your family members in this day and age?

My middle son just got out a few months ago….Calvary scout….I was airborne infantry in the mid 80’s….

His experience wasn’t mine but wasn’t bad. Glad he got out when he did. I just don’t trust the current government (or the administrative state-swamp).

When I was in it was the end of the Cold War and we had a purpose. Not so much today…. In today’s climate the military is little more than an expendable political tool for the “state”. You need look no farther than Afghanistan…

Only if one is actually "Called" to be in the military. If someone joins for something like college or some other perceived entitlement or benefit, it's only a matter of time before they realize it's not worth it. My body is broken, but it has given my family and I a fine life and future. salute

Yes, but not the Marines as I found that they made it a sport to treat you like dirt and thought treating you with respect would make you less effective at being a killer.

Air Force would be my recommendation. Anytime I worked with them I and the airmen were given respect as a human and still did a great job. We can’t just hand over the military to the libtards like we’ve done with schools.

I was in the Navy during the Vietnam era and would say yes to the Navy, Coast Guard, or Air Force. Not so much for the Army and Marines because of the political way things are going now. I have a relative that is an E-8 in the Army now that is two years from retirement and he/we are praying that nothing happens soon because of the leadership we now have.

I will step out and say this. I would like to see the draft come back into existence. I think that IF our younger generations, men and women, had to spend two years in the military we would not have as much of the nonsense that we are now seeing.

I retired from USAF in 93 and govt service last year. Before Barak Husain, I would have promoted both military and govt service...not so much now. agree with some version of compulsory public service.

Mainly only as an officer. Preferably OCS over an Academy. I won’t argue if they choose Academy if given the choice.

No enlisted unless they have royalty f’d up and they have ruined their relationship with their father, at that point I would proudly let them back in to the family at basic graduation.

If they get a college degree and still choose enlisted I won’t argue.

Not with the current ‘vaccine’ mandate. And not the USMC for the exact reason tenyearsgone said.

Apparently you don’t know how the process works.
The Navy used the same training technique in boot camp when I was in back in the ‘70’s it weeded out a lot of the people that didn’t need to be there IMO.

I would def recommend but I would recommend going to college and do ROTC or try and get accepted to Military academy. Do your initial required time and get out. Being a military officer opens a lot of doors once you become a civilian.

From what I've heard, its getting hard to get past E-6 in the air force. Don't have any idea why.

I would absolutely recommend it to about 8 out of 10 young men, seems to install a more solid base into you.

Enlisted nope, officer Candidate School yes. Having been enlisted Army Reserves myself, lots of guys in there as a "last resort or third strike avoidance. Other, smarter ways to address one's issues than going enlisted military. Hasn't been a draft since Vietnam and won't be again, maybe ever. Most wealthy guys or college age fellows got deferment during Nam, anyhow. 80%+ of enlisted military is served by minorities or lower socioeconomic part of society. The officer ranks is the middle to upper middle crust of US society. It is simply what it is.

The days of Sergeant York, Saving Private Ryan or the like are of the past, battlefields of today and future will have lots of autonomous warfare. Close end hand to hand combat days are behind us; smart bombs, cluster bombs and pulse signature lasers are in front of us.

I was a Chief Warrant Officer 2 in the Army. I would reccomend the Air.Force. when we worked with airforce guys and they were assigned to us, they were paid extra $ to stay in our barracks and eat our food for "substandard living compensation ". When I went to the air force bases and ate their dfac it was like a resort. Def go air force.over army. I wouldn't reccomend going in as enlisted. I started out as a E1, the lowest you can. But, I advanced fast and was a e5 sergeant in less than 3 years, and switched to warrant officer within 4 years. I think warrant officer is the best rank in the army. I don't know much about the navy, but I'd say af over army or marines for sure.

Yes...100%. I had the best job, Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD), School was long, very technical for obvious reasons.

No. I'd pay for trade school. Not cuz the country isn't fighting for, but the "new" military is run by Progressives and not folks that have a "we will win the war mindset."

I'm not talking about boot camp. I'm talking about how the Marines have a culture of disregard for any good treatment beyond the minimal amount to keep folks from breaking down. Even then, people still snapped. Anytime I was with the Airforce, Army, or Navy I was respected as a person much more than my home unit did. Instead of using emotional intelligence to listen to what we needed, it was always reactionary to an issue. Are there exceptions, of course, but I'm opining on the culture as a whole.

No, I don't claim to be an expert on military leadership, but I have my four years in the USMC in different units, a graduate degree in management, and corporate experience to formulate an objective opinion. Based on that, I would recommend the Air Force or even the Army. No, I don't like criticizing the branch I am proud to have served in, but he asked a question that requires an objective answer.

I was asked this question in 2001 and againt in 2003, the answer was no then and is still no now. Both were repeats of Vietnam, political war to try to make a [censored] into new image. That is pure political BS, just an ego trip for politicians. In return the politicians rake in millions of dollars from the defense industry so they will keep the crapshow going.

If the political bastards want their place in military history let them fight and DIE in their own war.
