This is a new build, built by competent gunsmith. I only have about 65 rounds through it with no issues. Then today of all days while hunting axis. click, nothing, rack another round making sure bolt is forward double checking forward assist- click no boom. By this time the buck is barely visible, rack another and this time, bang, dropped him. Luckily he was far enough away to not notice all the commotion. This is factory hornady ammo that I shot 6 rounds of yesterday to confirm zero. the primers of the failed shots have small dents in them, like it struck but they did not ignite or didn't strike hard enough..3lb velocity trigger which I also have in my 5.56 AR and never any issues with it.

clean chamber and reevaluate, especially if the rifle is shot suppressed, rounds may not have seated fully in chamber, may be undergassed after break in period, check the gas block seat for witness mark, and adjust if possible. small dent in primer could be firing pin tapping when chambering, depends on size of dent,

Check the alignment of the gas rings on the bolt. Pop out the buffer and spring to make sure they're not binding.

Welcome to an all too common result of light weight hammer springs on heavy cup (European*) primers

Try lubricating everything in the BCG well.

". . . click, nothing, rack another round making sure bolt is forward double checking forward assist- click no boom."

No gas ring alignment, lube, dirty chamber, or gas issue causes any of that if it was indeed in full battery as the OP stated specifically.

Light weight match drop in triggers get to be light weight in large part because of the springs used in them.

Multiple Hornady product lines have a decade + history of using heavy cup, "European sourced" primers.

This is not a new phenomena.

This guy pretty much nailed it.

One other thing I will add is to see what firing pin you have in the gun. This is a common issue with titanium firing pins not having enough inertia to set off the primer due to their light weight. If used in combination with light trigger and hammer springs it can really cause problems with heavy primers.

Which ammo do you all recommend that will have better primers? Hopefully I'll start handloading but seems like components are tough to get.

I have always used Silver State Armory. They were bought by Nosler probably 8+ years ago but I still have never had any issues with their ammo. They were pretty much the leader in 6.8 ammo for a very long time and probably still are.

The first thing I always do with any firearm with a light primer strike is to disassemble and thoroughly clean the action including firing pin and firing pin hole. Even with so few rounds. There could be a metal shaving or errant piece of dirt blocking something. 9 times out of 10, that fixes the issue. While you have it apart, you can inspect all parts for something abnormal.

Finally got around to give it a cleaning. Prior to this I had some custom ammo that the primers were blowing. And sure enough when I took bolt apart..there were pieces in there with firing pin. Gave it a good cleaning.
