After my shoulder surgery and the gall bladder surgery, I’m weaker than I’ve ever been. I have to keep this little ranch working, so being weak is a bad thing. I’ve been looking at the weight stack and thinking that I really need to get started. So, couple of days ago I did get started. It’s just sad. I’m lifting much less than I used to warm up with. This will be a long slow process, and I have to be careful to not hurt myself. Sore muscles, which I have, don’t count.

But, I do sleep better now. That’s an unexpected benefit.

I was warned many years ago that getting old sucked. Yep.

Baby steps.

I'm ready to get back on the weights too, but my shoulder is not. Started lifting again not long ago and apparently over did it again (old shoulder injury), it pops and hurts 24/7. Has my whole shoulder and neck muscles in a big knot. Cortisone shots didn't work, I don't even want to think about surgery. bang

Oh, I'm meeting the orthopedic Monday to go over my left shoulder MRI. 'Can't wait. Still waiting on approval for the MRI for my low back. (2nd request from my PCP.) This season is gonna be a hoot! I have received a full dose of my mortality in the last several weeks.

Full disclosure: There's a set of dumbells in my garage, on a rack. They were a gift from one of my daughters, many years ago. I need to dust those dam things. roflmao

Well I hope they don't find anything major. Shoulder injuries suck, can hardly do anything.

I'm pretty sure the knives are out, one way or another. 'Hope the nurses are pretty.

Dangit! Hope they're pretty too LOL.

Every time this shoulder of mine has flared up in the past, it usually heals enough within a few months where I can lift and do stuff again. It's taking forever this time. I dug a big hole and buried a bunch of cut off fence posts that were each set in 80-100 lbs of sackcrete. Instead of dragging them with my ranger, I picked them up and carried them to the hole and threw them in. Shoulder popped and that's when the suck really started, this time.

Shoulder surgeries are also the worst surgery recovery, with ankles being second

And I had ankle surgery 30 years ago. 3 weeks before my wedding. (Injury was roller skating with all the girls. My oldest wouldn't go out there without me holding her hand.) For the life of me, I still don't know what possessed me to "cross over", then I went down, trying to protect my back, that'll probably soon be operated on...again.) Wedding night...on serious pain pills...not my best work. Now, the night of the injury, and the ER doc forgot to write a script for pain, at her house, with a bottle of Jack down me...now that's a night I'm proud of. With a #$%^!@# broken ankle! banana2

Man, I’d complain about my shoulder, but compared to a couple of you guys my pain is nuthin. So, as for me, I was back on the weights long enough to irritate my right shoulder, and then hurt it further on that chainsaw. It’s good to be alive, but it sure was ‘gooder’ 20 years ago.

I'm only 45, with a hurt shoulder and 3 dislocated discs in my lower back. If I live another 20 years, I'm sure I'm really gonna be feeling it. roflmao

Hope you get to feeling better soon Sir.

70 here. Knee replacement 6/1. Rehab over. Started strength training with weights. The first week, I thought I had been a "Wake up Bill" truck wreck.

If the 2nd amendment was written just to include guns for hunting, why is there not an amendment to protect fishing poles?

This just might turn into the official old-men-bitching-about-ailments thread. Back MRI today. We'll see. Thursday night I was at the ranch, howling in pain with back spasms. Did NOT drink, took two Tramadol, and went to bed about 7:30pm. Also said more than one prayer. I've felt pretty darn good yesterday and today. When I stepped down out of the truck after the ride back home yesterday, my back actually felt better than it has in over a year. 'Splain that one to me, other than I should immediately join a monastery. I don't know if a chip moved, a nerve moved, or what, but Thanks Be To God.

Rotator Cuff surgery is scheduled for Dec. 28th. A few weeks ago, when I first re-injured it, I missed a little community band rehearsal. The next week I was feeling well enough to go. The band secretary is a sweet little, wisp of an old lady that handles all the music, bookkeeping etcetera. She's built, and looks like, my mother. She made a point to immediately come over and ask how my shoulder was. Here's the thing - she had her left arm amputated at the shoulder years ago. What do you say to a tough lady like that? roflmao

Glad to hear that you are doing a bit better. As to the upcoming shoulder surgery, Tramadol wasn’t quite enough to kill the pain for me and it didn’t last very long till big pain was back. And feel free to bitch.

And lay in a supply of Strawberry ice cream (which has curative powers) and chocolate chip cookies prior to the surgery.

603 go slow on the weights and make sure to do a good stretch session before you start. After you finish do a warm down stretch also.

Creekrunner what size shirts do you wear. Have my shirts that button up on the sleeves you can have if they will fit. I think they are xl-large but for them to be effective they need to be one size larger than you normally wear. In other words you need to normally wear a large for them to work for you. If they are too small you need to get you some for the first month until you can move your arm enough to put any kind of shirt on.

Creekrunner, smart thinking about getting the shoulder surgery after hunting season. Expect a long healing process with some physical training help after you totally heal. I’ve had one done and am, after 15 to 20 years, having problems that the Doc says means more surgery. I’ll put that off as long as possible.

I’m damn near 80 and don’t want to spend any of those remaining years healing a shoulder again.
