can it be filled in by a good gunsmith If one would it would probably cost as much as a new barrel. Ct and crown would be less expensive

Unless it was a really bad porting job, why would you want to? It lessens muzzle jump and improves recovery time for the next shot.

I hate any type of muzzle brake . I’m more likely develop a flinch over noise than recoil.

I always found it amazing how polarizing Magna porting could be. Folks either love it or hate it. Personally I have had the process done to a lot of revolvers and a couple rifles. I cannot find fault with it but others do.
But to your point. It would be technically possible to fill in the ports but I cannot imagine it being done except by welding. At the very least the heat would not help the barrel and the filling in to match the rest of the bore would take a lot of time and skill. A new barrel is a lot surer way to solve your problem.

I’ve never found magnaporting to increase perceived noise in the same way as muzzle brakes. I like the results and am a fan of the process. In terms of changing, I’m sure it’s easier and cheaper to sell and re-buy.

In terms of changing, I’m sure it’s easier and cheaper to sell and re-buy. Thanks for the reminder. Magna porting is light years away from a muzzle brake. It certainly is not as effective to reduce recoil like a brake but I cannot detect any increased noise from the Magna porting.... though there is probably some. Even then a muzzle brake on a rifle may not increase sound to the shooter (at least you may not notice it) but woe to the guy sitting next to you. I have always steered away from any sort of brake. But after many decades of shooting 30-06 or bigger rifles, the recoil would trigger migraines. So I finally started with muzzle brakes. I can't hear the difference from behind the rifle but my shoulder sure can feel the difference.

Another thing about magna porting should you have to shoot in low or no light it will give you temporary night blindness from the flash.

I have a 45 colt in a black hawk 4 5/8 revolver and in all honesty I can’t tell the difference in it pre magna port vs post. I have the actual magna porting.
If your willing Buzz you can shoot it with no muffs on and I will video tape it, of course I will let you shoor one of my 335 gr solids with a nice healthy dose of H110..

For the ports to make much difference they need to have a lot of gas and magnum pressures. I have an old 45 Colt 5.5" Redhawk that is safe a magnum pressures. The porting makes a lot of difference but at typical 45 Colt pressures the ports are not needed and they don't work much.

I also agree that, in handguns, the porting is noticeably more effective with high pressure loads.

I can’t tell much difference except maybe slightly less muzzle flip with the high pressure mag loads.. it’s definitely shoots molten lead on the front sight which is a pita to clean off the front sight post. I have shot a deer with it once, definitely does the job, but I used ear plugs cuz I am not gonna go deaf shooting a pistol!
