started this morning at 4. Woke up hearing a thumping noise from the attic. Pulled down the ladder got about halfway up and it quit as the motor started blowing as it should. 6am same thing happened so I call out A/C guy. He gets here around 12:30 and informs me that it is in the process of going out and only a matter of time until it quits kicking in. Quotes me a cost and orders the motor which should be here tomorrow. 4:15 and motor will not kick in and it's already 78 in the house. Gonna be a long night I'm afraid. Good thing the wife is out of town for a couple of days or we would be adding a hotel bill to the cost as she hates a warm house.

BTW the bar is open. Buffalo Trace for me what are you having?

One of those $200 evaporator units may keep your room kind of cool at night.

Thankfully it’s cooler this week than the last couple.
Sorry to hear either way. What type of motor?

At least the A/C company is on it ASAP, just gonna be one night you'll make it with or without the window unit.

I've kept a window unit for years. Used it within 2 months of moving into brand new home, when the ac failed and no-one had parts for the just released model.

Neighbor used it for 6 days last week, while she waited for parts in the 100 + heat.

It also runs on my little portable inverter generator, should the power go out AND the Generac fail.

I grew up in South Texas without AC, but I no longer consider it a luxury. Its essential to my old fat a55.

We all need to practice Whoa more.

I’m in the same boat, sorta.
Ac went out last night, total loss. She’s 20 years old and been waiting on this day. I set up 2 window units this morning and have the upstairs unit running. Wife says it’s more comfy than normal.
I had 8 quotes today for a 2.5 ton, 16 seer.. ranged from 7k-9.2k eek2

20 years was a good run. Big range on the quotes. Lots of things to consider. Good luck.

Our main unit went out about a week and a half ago. Had my AC guy come look. 19 year old unit, needs a new evap coil and 20#s of R22. R22 is $120 a pound right now. Got quotes for new system, 5.5 ton, 18 seer two stage unit is about $10k. Called home warranty company since we've only been here 6 months. Waiting until today before their contractor could come out. He confirmed the evap is shot and we need freon. Waiting on warranty company to see if they approve his patch job, if not it'll be a new unit.

Tell me about it. Hasn't been too bad, our bedroom has its own unit and the upstairs is on its own unit. Kitchen and living room has been hovering around 80° so the other two units have been running a lot.

Whoa Buddy. Have a 30 Pound sealed bottle of R22 if you need it. That's Highway Robbery on the $120 a pound. That would be $3600 for 30 pound bottle. .My Bottle (Dupont I think) is left over from my Prevost Bus I sold. Had 3 AC"s in it that took that juice. Even $25 a pound would be like Jessie James Robbing Banks on a Bottle.

There is not a chance in the world you will find anyone selling R22 for $25 a pound as they would be taking a huge loss. I believe that a 30lb drum of R22 is running close to $2,200 and even then you don’t get the full 30lb out of the drum.

All refrigerant prices have mirrored fuel prices. But, this began three years ago, or so.
R22 actual cost per pound is $70-$80 per pound, Today. No idea next month.
No matter what you sell, oil field parts, trucks, ammo, hay, insurance, drugs or money, the seller must turn a profit.

The EPA war on refrigerants began years ago. Unless something changes, you ain't seen nothing yet.

The SCOTUS ruling against the EPA may give us some hope.

If the 2nd amendment was written just to include guns for hunting, why is there not an amendment to protect fishing poles?

A/C is fixed. Got up to 82 degrees last night in the house. Bedroom sounded like a wind tunnel with the three fans I had going in there but it was tolerable for sleeping. Reminded me of growing up and and on my first ship with no A/C at all.

Yeah. The 4th is only Monday. Most suppliers will be closed 4 days.
