Anyone use one of the Caldwell shooting rest bags like pictures below? What were your thoughts on it?

I’m planning on my 6 year old hunting a lot more with me this year in hopes of hopefully his first deer. This will be in a 4x6 box blind what has shelving to accommodate a larger bag like this. If it’s something that could be helpful for him to be more steady, I’m all for it. I was initially thinking of a big pod, but it gets tight with just me and my tripod/spotter in the blind, much less with 2 people and a tripod, which is what led me to this Caldwell bag.

Many options out there and im sure others will point you in the right direction. My only suggestion would be to insure the elbows/body is rested/stabilized as well. That may be obvious to you but many dont know or dont worry about it. Personally I cant hit squat if Im not all locked in.

Oh, you and me both. I'm changing this blind/feeder set up this year primarily for him to be able to shoot. I still have long shots I can take, but I typically use a front and rear bag for those. He hasn't quite mastered the front and back bag just yet.

ChadTRG turned me onto this item, an X-bag (for the shape). He told me he shot his groups out of it. I have one and really like it, but it's kinda large-unless your blind is really set up for it. It sounds like your setup would be really good, OP, and would definitely help out a 6-yr old. Just have him make some test shots to make sure POI isn't altered by the bag changing the way the rifle recoils.

Insert sand into zip lock baggy. Place in tube sock, Blanton's bag, Crown Royal bag or anything similar. Done.

Agree Hudbone. At least for hunting. However when I was doing precision shooting, I preferred the X ones.

Huds is pretty much my approach. However, Im trying to up my game on accuracy for my hunting rifles so Im spending more time at the range. Do yall agree that X type bag would work good off the bench? I know yall have talked about some snazzy stuff before so lets hear it. Rear bag too.

I don't have any shelves in my blinds so I use something similar to what's at the below link. Mine is leather, filled with sand, and sits on the window ledge with two ears that drop down on the inside and outside of the blind wall for balance (I think I ordered it from Cabelas 5 or 6 years ago). Works for me.

That xbag would certainly do the job if you have the room for it. I wonder if the bag might be too tall (7” height) for a six yr old to use comfortably? Reason I say is I used to use the front bag of a Caldwell Deadshot (8”) in my blind and found my office chair didn’t elevate enough for my young nephew to use it comfortably. Again just my experience.

Now I use a Caldwell Blind Bag and a Primos bipod to support the rear. It seems to be a good combo for me and my “vertically challenged” guests to use.

Don't laugh, but this is what I use: https://wiebad.com/tater-tot/

While driving around the ranch, the ears hug the window ledge. It plops nicely on truck beds and fence posts. Can be plumped up to work for mag-fed rifles at precision and PRS matches. The only time I don't carry it with a rifle is when I have to run miles.

I will say, if you carry it on a plane and use it as a pillow, other shooters may judge.

I use the bogpod death grip. Fully adjustable height and swivels. [Linked Image]

I see posts like this and realize many people are way more involved than what i do. Maybe i just works for me, maybe i could be better with a different set up, but what works has worked and i don’t need much more. I use a window bag very similar to what kry226 uses. In my All Seasons Blind, it came with foam window inserts and i just use those.

I will say none of my blinds have shelves and since most of my hunting is archery based, i have no plans to change my set ups by adding big shelves to put something more solid in.

I had an older ripstop shirt. Cut off the sleeves and sawed one end. Then added aquarium gravel and sawed it up. sand doesn't leak out and it if very stable.

I like the way you think. Probably made the shirt better too.

This one is pretty handy depending upon how the blind is built. It's a Todd pac from Wiebad down in college Station. Other good option is the Tater tot bags imo. https://wiebad.com/tac-pad/

I have reaper rest and bog pod. Just depends on which blind I’m at. Leave bod pod usually in box blind and keep reaper to use in popup blinds

I strongly believe in the use of curtains to obscure movement and sight lines, but curtain rods? An interior finish out? Are the walls insulated? Oh my, did you use an interior decorator?

Simple to use and very effective. Used this style rest many times with first time hunters. OBTW....that is a .223 on the rest. bolt

STx, that’s a great rest, and many many others are as well. But what I never understand is what people do to rest their elbows and stabilize the rest of the body. I’m not a good shot at all of all if all I rest is the gun.

I kind of forgot about this thread..my apologies.

Here’s the best pic I could find of the inside. There’s a fixed shelf front and back about 3” below the the window ledge. The side shelf just sets on top of the front and rear shelf so I can slide it wherever needed.

There’s some good info y’all posted and I’m looking into a lot of those options. I’m replacing one of the office chairs in that stand with a tall office chair, just for him. I currently have him in an office chair with a makeshift pad he can see up out of the windows better, but it’s not a good long term solution.

I’ve definitely thought of a bog pod but when he and I are in the stand together a tripod (spotter) makes it tight. I may be able to pull that sliding shelf out and use one that way.

ZK, that’s similar to what I do. I add another loose board that can be moved where you want. I put it cockeyed so I can lay my whole body over it to steady as much as I can. Both boards can be moved left as needed. I don’t see how it can be improved upon, without even considering the cost and ease.

That was a simple fix. We keep a milkcrate in each blind for that purpose. You put your right foot(if right handed) on top of the upside down milkcrate and then rest your elbow on top your right knee. This style shooting rest can be modified for level, uphill or downhill shots.
