i will be purchasing a new hunting rifle within a few weeks and have narrowed it down to two, and decided to go with .308 caliber. The first is the Savage 110 high country, and the other is the Franchi momentum elite. i have read reviews for both and they seem about the same level of customer satisfaction, but im always weary of random reviews left. does anybody have experience or insight into either?

I can’t help you but you came to the right place for advice. The guys I’m sure will ask you what you plan to use it for before they give detailed advice.

this will be my primary deer hunting rifle. Not shooting anything extreme, 100yds to max of 300 yds.

I have zero experience with the Franchi. Every Savage I've ever touched will flat out shoot. The issue with Savage is the extractors. I've had some that would give me issues sometimes, and some that I've never had issues with. JG will tell you that they all suck, but I haven't found that to be true.

I have the Savage 110 High Country .308 and so far I like it. Only run 15 rounds through so far and accuracy looks good.
The trigger is nice, the magazine holds 4 rounds, the barrel is a heavier contour and threaded with cap. I like that the barrel and the bolt is spiral fluted which gives it a nice look. Over all I like the rifle and will be glad to spend more time behind the trigger.

Savage. They just flat shoot good and have a good aftermarket support.

I’ve never even heard of the Franchi rifle but it’s not a savage so I would go with that

I will tell everyone about ejectors first. They will eventually give it up. Don't know how many ejector springs I've replaced in Savage bolts.

Extractor design is stupid but works decent.

Get a Tikka T-3 and run the hell out of it.

When my stepson turned 18, I got him a LH Tikka T-3 in .308 for it to be his rifle for the rest of his life.

From your choices, I think I know the style you are looking for. I would look at the Tikka T3X Lite Veil options.

I would choose the savage.

I have the Savage 110 High Country in 6.5 Creedmoor. I love it, shoots great, and I run a SilencerCo Omega suppressor with it. I’ve owned Savage and Tikka rifles, I shoot a Savage rifle better. Tikka’s have a very smooth action no question about it, but to get a heavy/threaded barrel you have to spend a lot more. I don’t shoot the thin barreled Tikka’s well, but that’s just me.

IMO, the Savage High Country is such a good value. The cerakote, fluted threaded barrel in a factory rifle is awesome. Not to mention, it’s accurate. I shot one of my best 5 shot groups with this rifle out of the box. I wanted a rifle that I wouldn’t need to modify; no aftermarket stock, barrel threading, aftermarket trigger, etc. That’s why I went with the High Country and I’m glad I did.

I have seen two recent but different Franchi reviews, one 6.5 PRC and one 308 and neither review was positive. I love their shotguns, but I would walk away quickly from their rifles. For that money, you can throw a Tikka in place of the Franchi and then I would choose the Tikka.

I don’t know anything about a Franchi rifle. Savage earned a reputation for making rifles that shoot.

There is one opinion generally held about Savage bolt rifles. If you miss, it was not the rifle.

Just about every factory production rifle built today can shoot. The last rifle i can bear memory to that was horrible accuracy wise with the Remington 710 but that was 20 years ago.

Savage has earned a reputation for great accuracy, especially at their price point BUT.......the fit and finish is lacking in comparison.

Of those two, I'd go with the Savage hands down. I own a bunch of Savage rifles and they just flat out shoot, my oldest go-to deer rifle is an old Savage 110 in 243 that I bought used 27 yrs ago. I have never had any trouble out of any of them, ever.....but all of mine are hunting rifles, I don't run them hard on the range like JG does putting thousands of rounds through them a year.

I've got a Tikka in the safe, nothing special. It just sits there.

I've always wanted a Winchester Supergrade, but that's $$. Can't beat a Savage for the price point. Savage and Mossberg are nowhere near the same ballpark.

Everyone has their flaws, it’s ok you like ugly guns. You are one of the few that would admit owning a savage in public. I can respect that….

My Tikka is freakin' ugly. They're the Glock of the rifle world.

All three of the Savage rifles that I own are accurate and 100% reliable.
