I’ve been working 3 days 3 off 3 nights for 24 years. Somehow in the last few years it has started screwing with me. I was up at 02:00 this morning, ran to the store, reloaded to go shoot this morning, and had my wife’s coffee ready by 05:00. Anyone else deal with this? I do get enough sleep at 5-6 hours a day but who knows when it will be.

Anyone else deal with this? Don’t know if you’re coming or going? I feel like the old Dunkin’ Donuts commercial “time to make the donuts” when the guy would pass himself going to work.

I worked nights for more than 12 years straight, never a rotating shift…

My uncle worked swings at Eastman. Took him several years post retirement to get close to a normal sleep routine.

After doing it for many years my retirement sleep is all over the place. 2-3 days with little sleep and then a 12 hour crash. Then repeat.

Worked it in the Navy it was called a 2-2-2-80. 2 day shifts, 2 mid shifts, 2 eve shifts than 80 hours off. Hated it didn't know if I was coming or going.
Worked other jobs installing computer systems at night and off hours. Didn't care for it but the money was good.

I'm the type of guy as to when it gets dark it's bedtime. I only need 6-7 hours of sleep not a long sleeper.

Wife use to work a rotating shift. There were four shifts and you did 2 weeks of each. It was both good and bad for married life.

A friend of mine worked all 3 shifts every week for the railroad. 2 midnight, 2 afternoon, 2 days. This plus nearly an hour drive eachway!

My son has been doing rotating am/pm 12 hour shifts for a power company for the last 8 years. I don’t see how he does it. A plus is he gets lots of time off to spend with his young boys.

I never did understand the reasoning behind rotating shifts. Seems like a great way to keep all your employees from doing a good job. People need some sort of consistency in sleep schedules to operate at a decent level.

It gets worse as you get older….I force myself to stay up later than I used to so I won’t wake up at 1:00 AM.

I worked rotating shifts for 17 years. It was a crazy schedule that you never go used to.
4 days 7am-3pm, one day off.
11pm-7am, for 3 days followed by 2 days off.
3pm-11pm for 5 days followed by 2 days off.
7am-3pm for 3 days followed by 2 days off.
11pm-7am for 4 days followed by 2 days off.
3pm-11pm for 5 days followed by 2 days off.
It took 5 weeks to rotate through then it started all over again.
We finally changed over to 4-10 hour days with 3 days off.
That was great! I worked the night shift, 9 pm to 7am.
Never had a issue.

Most people need more sleep than they think. There’s no way that type of schedule is good for the body and mind long term.

To me it is the flipping it around that hurts, I have worked days, nights and flipping between the 2 on a weekly basis.

I used to work rotating shifts at Eastman. At first they were the 8 hour ones, days, evenings and graveyards in 7 day stretches. The biggest problem was days and evenings often turned into a 16 hour shift, then the rest of the scheduled week was either 12 hour days or nights. I had no problem sleeping on the above schedule, but when they went to a 12 hour rotating schedule, I got to where I couldn't sleep at night. We only worked 3 to 4 days or nights in a row with differing days off depending where you were on the rotation. The 7 days off were nice but not worth it. Thankfully there was a waiting list of folks that wanted to be on shift and I rotated back to straight days. It took me about 6 months to get back to a regular sleep schedule. I am retied now and sometimes my sleep pattern gets out of wack. I will stay up for about 36 hours then go to bed at the time I normally would and usually get everything back on schedule for a few years.

Worked every shift imaginable in the AF. Average 6-7 hrs a night sleep now, still wake around 6am.
I’ve lost the ability to nap. Been quite a few years now.

I’ve been doing it for a year now. If I only worked my scheduled days, it’d be great. Unfortunately I’m sitting just shy of 600 hour of OT this year, so it gets a little old.

yup....worked month on month off 12 hour shifts for years. Never got back to normal. Lots of nights with zero sleep. When younger I could handle it but sure leaves me drained now.

There's been studies done on these hours and the affects it has on people. The studies have shown the hours are like a carcinogen, very hard on the body. It leads to heart disease. cardio problems among other things.

Up at 02:00 yesterday turned into early to bed and now up at midnight for the day. Guess I’ll be ready to go back to nights tomorrow.
