For deer a 3-9 will get you far. I like them for hunting big game. I like a little more power for target shooting. Most of my deer rifles are 8-10x at the high end. High magnification doesn’t hurt but like the field of view at lower powers. I mostly hunt with my optic on 4X or 6X depending on the terrain. Helps me get on target faster.

4.5x on the low end crippled the handiness that Mohawk was designed to fulfill. Good scope. Good rifle. Poor combination as others have tried to point out. You mention the inconsistency of your grouping - a lot of that has to do the inherently poor cheek weld.

I have a similar type of rifle. I have a Ruger 77 Full Stock Carbine with an 18.5” barrel in 308. I have a Zeiss Conquest MC 2.5-8X. Very handy little combo. The crosshairs on the scope are a little thicker than a regular duplex so it’s good in low light and timber.

I don't understand much about how it works. Some of ya'll telling me I bought too powerful of a scope so I'm thinking about selling it.

Verdict is in, the Timney trigger I installed, stock inletting and replacing bottom plastic with metal torqued to 40" lbs worked out great. Grinding the screws down and putting a chamfer on them by hand up against a cut off grinder was the hardest part about the whole process. I shot three groups over a two day period and all grouped well, about 750" was the worst. It held zero, being carried around, riding in the Ranger, in and out of the rear case. It's handy, and shoots consistently enough for me to shoot at stuff near, and far.

I’m guessing those groups were .750” vs 750”.

Really liking this old rifle. 175 yards on the move. This is the most work I ever completed on a rifle and to see it come through when it mattered was satisfying. 4.5 to 14x works for this application, the accuracy gain from sanding barrel channel, swapping out trigger and changing out bottom plastic for metal made a solid rig.

Curious have you dialed that scope up to 14x yet? At that power you will get a much smaller field of view and that is what folks were telling you. No need for 14x with a 308 unless you are shooting rainbow shots at very long range .
Funny you jumped all over folks offering good advice only because the guy at Academy told you you needed more scope. Nice rifle, I had one just like it with a 3x9 and it shot great but I wanted something flatter shooting and went to w 300wsm, with that rifle a 4-12x40 works great.

Apparently my attempt at sarcasm was misunderstood. The kids in the blue shirts at Academy were fictional. I "jumped all over" someone that used my post to self promote their ability. I have a 3-15x on a CTR in .308 and shot it at the Hunters Challenge twice, have hunted it for years and made a lot of long shots. I had a 3-18 on a 5R Milspec in .308 and also had great experience with it. On both of these, I often dialed them all the way up for shots past 400 yards. This rifle, I wanted to keep it dialed way down for short range, but also be also be able to dial it up to 14x for a possible shot at 500+ yards. I have dialed it to 14x. The original post was about the complete rifle and the story behind it. I've added a rail, installed a Timney trigger, free floated the barrel, and ordered/installed bottom metal. Maybe a post in the optics section could be started on what magnification levels are appropriate by caliber, since some feel that 9x is the max that should be on a .308?

Just curious but why would you need more magnification on a 308 than 9x? I have a 3x9 on a 7mm Mag and have made shots up to 500 yards and never had an issue. Get whatever you want since it is your rig but I am curious. You are a great and mighty hunter, a better shot than me, and the wind beneath my wings. Just asking a question. Yet you decide to come off with a really stupid and rather rude reply. Why would I have expected an intelligent and civil answer? By the way, more magnification doesn't make you a better shot nor does it make the rifle any more accurate. Time spent of the range shooting does and time spent hunting with the rifle also does. Something tells me, based on your reply, that you don't spend much time doing either. You have a "nice" day. I was wrong, you're more like the wind in my shorts. What a Dweed! The scope on it is overly heavy and looks funny on the rifle. Hope your day sucks.

I'm hurt, I wanted to look good. I was wearing a flat bill cap and white sunglasses, does that balance out my "funny" looking scope.

Ah yes, misunderstood sarcasm. Got it now.
I've just seen folks with overly large objectives and very high power not be able to find an animal in their scope as they have it turned up to see the antlers. With a proper rest you can shoot that 308 out to 1,000yds and that higher power would be needed for that. But with higher magnification you get more heat mirage, smaller field of view and excess weight. Light gathering ability has more to do with coatings than objective size but the size does matter.
For me, the Mohawk I had balanced right and shot well with a smaller scope and 9x was all I ever needed. Binos are for glassing , not a rifle scope. The larger field of view really helps at longer ranges, finding the animal in the scope for the shot.
Nothing personal here, just a matter of difference of opinion. Nice rifle though, hope you enjoy it.

Put what ever you want on it as it is your rifle for your use. Taking it to 500 yards hunting I can understand wanting more scope than I or others would put on it as my shots max out about 300 yards where I hunt these days.
The most out of balance/useless for the purpose setup I have seen was a kid with a light weight M4 size AR with a 8X32 Night Force on it saying it was for night hog hunting.

Who puts >14x on a .22lr? Not me, but some shooters do as their application calls for it. This is an extreme example, but the point is to give advice (in this case unsolicited) on scope magnification based on caliber alone isn't worth much. I was getting advice on the scope based on caliber alone without any knowledge of my ability, experience or the area I hunt. The story on this rifle are the modifications that were done to make it a great shooter. Since posting this, I've met a shooter/hunter that has one. We've traded advice, and some parts. I learn a lot from the forum, hope I can give some useful information back.
