Over the years I have put out trace minerals for deer in the spring and summer. I have not seen much activity on those sites in the past few years. I'm up by Wolfe City.
Does anyone in that area know of something else I can use?
Recently I tried a bag of deer cane and the deer just pass it by. Same thing with the trace minerals.

Check with your feed store; they may try to upsell you, but they know what sells and what sits.

If you or someone nearby is feeding protein, the deer probably won't hit the minerals. Most protein pellets already has all of the trace minerals added to them.
Silver spurs and gold tequila keep me hanging on. Pretty girls and old cantinas give me shelter from the storm.

There isn't anyone within a mile from my location so I don't think they are being fed by anyone but me at this time. I'll check with my local feed store and see what they say. Thanks

Trace mineral blocks don't go empty like a protein feeder does, unless you're really not paying attention. I try to keep them up off the ground, out of pigs' reach. They're well used. I don't think the deer lik'em with pig scent all over them. I have a couple of bale feeders with a mineral block shelf on the end and I'm having 3 more made. Try to jerry-rig something. The prices they want for a stand-alone mineral block stand are insulting to a person's intelligence.

Trace mineral blocks are cheap and do not really do much for deer other than act as an attractant. They are mainly salt with very limited amounts of mineral/vitamin. Look at an actual deer mineral that is made to fit a deer's nutritional needs. Do not expect them to eat it everyday or every week or every month...they will use it when they need it. You can not really gauge or predict when they will use a mineral site or feeder. You can buy a block or bag of granular mineral for deer. Look for Lyssy & Eckel, Purina or Acco/Sportsmans Choice brands for a deer mineral. Minerals are not cheap and should be kept out year round if you expect to get any usage or results. Most areas in Texas lack some mineral(s) in the soil or vegetation they consume. Water even has minerals in it. With a deer mineral you are trying fill in what they are lacking. A deer in Texas may need something completely different than a deer from another state. So buy a mineral made for or in Texas for Texas deer. You will see deer sign or deer utilize cattle mineral sites. They are there for what they are lacking. It is better than going without. Lot of areas in the state, the deer only need mineral in their diet. Also, for instance some minerals are very important in a bucks antler growth or for a doe that is lactating. There are many different ways to feed block or granular minerals. Search the internet for what people have done and try one till you get the results you are looking for.

Did you try Deer Can Black Magic or just the regular stuff? I've been putting the Black Magic out every 3 months with fantastic results. It's the first thing the deer go to, and even if I'm out of corn and the food plot is dead, they still keep coming for the Black Magic. The instructions said to spread it out over a 4x4 area that holds as much moisture as possible. When I first did it, the area I picked was a small depression that remained muddy longer then the rest of the food plot. Today it's a shallow pond over a foot deep and 8 feet wide. https://www.amazon.com/Evolved-Habitat-Deer-Black-Magic/dp/B000HHM7SY/ref=sr_1_2?crid=1ZX7MVV04BH6E&keywords=black+magic+deer+cane&qid=1653832828&sprefix=black+magic+deer+%2Caps%2C152&sr=8-2 ![[Linked Image]](https://texashuntingforum.com/forum/pics/userpics/2022/05/full-53476-349041-272506781_10227417093675727_8683079454719182668_n.jpg) ![[Linked Image]](https://texashuntingforum.com/forum/pics/userpics/2022/05/full-53476-349042-27654773_10215622874507619_8945130814113510160_n.jpg)

I use 1 part dicalcium phosphate and 2 parts trace mineral salt. 3 50# bags mixed well and then place in 5 gallon buckets. 1 bucket per mineral site. Break up the ground with a pick axe and then mix in with the dirt. As it collects moisture it spreads into the surrounding soil. Have deer hitting in daily on cameras. I refresh with the same mixture or a bag or two of deer cocaine every 45-60 days through the summer. ![[Linked Image]](https://texashuntingforum.com/forum/pics/userpics/2022/05/full-27018-349086-316d7890_24d1_4925_8aa5_a0c66c0d8911.jpeg)

Try Tractor Supply online. If they don’t have it at your local store, you can order and pick up locally.
