How old is the bar and chain?
When is the last time you replaced the sprocket? (clutch)
check your drive links for burs as well.

I bet the bar is slightly bent in one spot or another.

First check chain tensioner and chain tension. You need a little slack in the chain but the drive teeth should not pull free of the guide rails. If the tensioner won’t tighten far enough, you may have a stretched chain. Remove a link or replace the chain. To remove a link you must open the master link. Worn drive teeth on the chain can also be the culprit. If that is the issue, replace the chain. If not the chain tension then your problem may be either worn guide rails or debris in the guide rails on the bar or a bad nose sprocket on the bar. If you have got the blade in the dirt, clean out the guide rails. If the guide rails or nose sprocket are bad, replace the bar. If the bar is good then check the drive sprocket. If the drive sprocket is badly worn it will need to be replaced. If chain, bar, and drive sprocket are good, check the bar heel. If it is worn it will also cause the chain to jump off. One of these is most likely your problem. The only thing left is the tensioner. They can strip but that is usually least likely to be the problem. If you don’t know what those things are, YouTube is your friend.
Armed with this info you should be able to find your problem and fix your saw.

The times I’ve had that problem, and the neighbor too, it was usually a stretched chain. And I had a Poulan once that had a busted chain tensioner.

If the bar is worn turn it upside down.

If it’s an Oregon chain, take it off and throw it away.

Great advise!

Before you check the above, is it the right chain to start with? Just because it is the right length doesn't mean it's the right chain. Make sure it's the right guage, pitch and the correct number of drive links.
