Do you swap it out with new, how frequent, and why?

Absolutely! There has been many links to ammo reliability issues due to excessive handling and chambering and unchambering of rounds. There was a recent case where a police officer got into a gun battle. His first round didn't go off. He cycled the pistol and got back into the fight. Afterwards, they inspected that first round, and the primer compound had become dust. He had chambered that first round over and over, and the jostling of that round had made the primer dead. That's an extreme case, but it still can be an issue. I have to clear my carry pistol on occasion, and I will try to cycle that first round to the bottom of the mag. I have also had issues with sweat getting down into the chamber and causing rust (on a nickel coated round) from the scratches of that round being chambered multiple times. I have some older factory ammo I shot from many years back, and it cycled and shot fine. Will most of it work, yes. But there are many situations where shooters can cause issues with their carry ammo, if not taken care of. And yes, I do swap out and cycle my carry ammo. I think it's a little more important to change out your carry ammo, especially that first round or two from multiple chamberings.

What about resting your magazines springs? 'Seems I read in Ayoub's self-defense book to rotate magazines and unload the one you're taking out. For the sake of simplicity, I should have fewer pistols ready to go, but I don't. The paranoid survive.

I thought the spring premise was that it's the repeated action (load/unload) that weakens springs, not constant compression? I never rest my mags.

I shoot my carry ammo when I see a skunk or snake or something else that needs to be shot. I sometimes carry my everyday carry at the ranch, and it gets used on occasion. If I go too long without shooting it, I probably would rotate it just because it couldn't hurt.

Not intentionally. As in, I don't think to myself "geee, it's probably time to swap out my ammo". But I shoot often enough that all of my handguns see some action a few times a month. So, I suppose it occurs, just not for the specific reason you are asking about.
On that note, even if I didn't shoot often - I wouldn't spend an iota of time worrying about swapping out my ammo.... I would guess that the odds are higher of you being struck by lightning ... than good ammo suddenly going bad on you.

Top two get changed every 6 months or so. Full mag every 18 months or so. Am I right, probably not but that is how I do it.

I didn’t realize people rechamber ammo over and over. The only time I pull a live round from the chamber is if I am going to hand the gun to someone for inspection. That doesn’t happen very often. Otherwise all my pistols are ready to rock.
On the primers breaking down. I have several 1911 magazines loaded in my console that have been there 100,000 plus miles. I wonder if the vibration over time has damaged them.

I've seen you drive grandpa, those primers are just fine I'm going to get a box of bullets to load new carry ammo. I'll test fire my current, factory stuff for chits and giggles. I'm guessing it works good but it's as old as my kids, maybe older.

Interesting thread - I have never given this any real thought. It would have not been an issue in the past, but I don't shoot my defensive ammo as much these days.
A Democracy is when two wolves and a lamb vote on the dinner menu. That is why this country was specifically not designed as a Democracy. We are a Constitutional Republic.

I change mine out but, but not intentionally..
Unfortunately, this time of year, expensive carry ammo gets slung at nope ropes, as I usually forget to change magazines when arriving at the ranch.

It hasn’t been mentioned yet but I have read if you repeatedly slam a round in to the chamber by letting the slide go that over time the bullet will move in the case. Not a once or twice thing but if say everyday you unloaded it and then slammed the slide when you reloaded that it could cause the bullet to shift.
I unload my gun once a week to clean it. I don’t leave the house without my pistol and it gets nasty especially when I am working at the ranch,

We supplied weapons and ammo for our officers. Whether they were on the streets, CID, etc. The ammo was replaced every six months. They shot the duty stuff that was issued, plus whatever else we were doing that day, then issued new ammo. We did not worry about the magazines springs. When weapons were being cleaned, the mags were emptied and cleaned as needed. Never had any problems with not functioning properly. Some don't know this, but Glock, at one point, loaded up thousand of magazines. Put them away for a period and then would take one out and shot those rounds. Never an issue.
Now that I am retired, I don't change the ammo as much. Mainly because I am having to buy it. I do still shoot it and put fresh in. Clean it and get it ready to go. Except for my first G 17 that I got in 1986. I used to clean it but now I let it sit, fully loaded and dirty. Take it out when I am training someone. Still runs..
