So, i have been trying to figure out the best thing for me to do at the moment on the vehicle i drive. I have a 2007 dodge 2500 with the 5.9 cummins.. runs great.. paint is fading, normal wear and tear etc. only thing is that i cant keep the Ac going for more than a year or so and it goes out... other than that it runs good and heck gets 18-20 mpg... My wife says i need something more reliable, to bu something else... Well, we all know what the auto market is like right now...

So i have thought about just keeping my truck, fixing things as they need fixing or even taking a small loan out to really go through it, paint it, etc. My son will start driving in 3 years so it would be a good one for him. OR... keeping it and then buying me a little half ton (used) to drive around and then use mine when i need to haul trailers, etc..

I keep going back and forth and Im not sure what the best option would be... An thoughts or ideas? Much appreciated.

Keep it. Repair it. Drive the wheels off for at least the next few years.

To be determined

Yep. In this market by far the best financial option.

You can make a lot of repairs every year and still be way ahead financially over buying a new truck.

With prices in this market I would drive it. I saw on article on Yahoo that stated that the new car market will return to the way things were with inventory on dealer lots and discounts off MSRP. Not sure if I believe it. I saw a Jeep ad the other day for a Wagoneer for $62k. I would not even think about spending $62k on a Wagoneer.

You could probably rebuild motor, fix dash, re-paint and re-do seats 3x for 55k

I have a 2003 Ram 4x4 with a 5.9 just like yours with 161800 miles on it that I bought new. I plan on driving it until it really gives me problems that I can`t justify fixing and still drive it. It stays parked in my shop until I "Need a truck". I retired 18 months ago and haven`t put 2000 miles on it since retiring. Clean it up a little and keep driving it.

I think they still called it a "Dodge" back then. [Linked Image]

I buy new and then drive them until the wrecking yard won’t take them. Right now I have 3.

Keep a screwdriver in the glove box. When it won't go anymore, get out, take off the license plate and call uber.

I don’t like vehicles sitting for long periods of time. Seals fry out and fluids break down, then when you need it there’s always something wrong.

If "cant keep the Ac going for more than a year or so ..." means you need to add a a can of Freon, then you don't have a problem.

That 5.9 Cummin's is a motor that they should never have gotten rid of. With that said you can do a lot of repairs for the price of a new vehicle the way they are priced today.

It was a Dodge Ram back then. I still have the new truck sticker and it has RAM TRUCK on it in 2 separate places and my truck has RAM 2500 on both front doors.
