Was sitting in my recliner when the Powerline camera alerted me that something had its picture made. It was that big black Boar. I’m not exactly dressed to hunt, being in my jammies, but I ran to the barn and got the 260 from the safe. Then trotted in some house slippers about 150 yards down to the edge of that field. Knowing that sooner or later I’d have to shoot from there, I had pre-positioned a shooting stick at the corner. Thought I was pretty darned smart. And there was the hog. A big un. About 250 yards to the hog from where I was. Well, plans aren’t always good enough. The shooting stick gave great vertical support, but awful side to side support. I missed, I think. I needed shooting StickS, not just one stick. I will correct the mistake.

Never too old to learn! Why didn't you just lean against a tree?

I would have thought the corner of the barn would work with support hand as well. The crossed shooting sticks or tripod give a lot better side to side support than a single stick.

No tree right there, just bushes. I had planned for that moment, but planned badly. I hope I get another chance at him.

And I had trotted double time, and was huffing and puffing a bit. Not a young stud any more, sadly.

Ooooooo, I hate to miss. This’ll bug me for a while.

And…it seems that I missed badly. The hog came back to the feeder about an hour after being shot at. I am insulted!

Good. He's not spooked. Maybe he'll be back tomorrow.

Bipod and a rear bag. That is always plan A for me when not in a stand. Consider a 6-9" bipod. I carry canvas mat rolled up and a light weight bag in my day pack. With this and a bipod I always have a stable platform, drop to my belly and shoot solid.

An unethical shot is one you take, that you know you shouldn't.

He didn't look at the camera and stick out his tongue or do any taunting dance?

For 250 yards, I’d get a BOG Deathrip tripod.

That story is exactly what I do all the time. Meaning, the planning, running, etc. If you have a good feeder, with a lot of pig activity, set up one of these cheap shooting benches with a couple of crappy jeans filled with sand. Tilt the shot to your advantage. And without knowing, sometimes if I really want to make it a bad day for a pig, I’ll go to a known larger caliber. Nothing like getting hit with a cannon; even a gut shot.

I hadn’t considered building a shooting bench. Hmmm. I could do something simple I suppose. First though, I’ll try the home made shooting sticks, and I’ll actually shoot off of them to see if it’ll work acceptably. If not, maybe I’ll do a simple shooting bench of treated wood. This won’t be the last time I shoot from that corner, I’m sure.

I shot at the hog around 8:15. He was back at 9 pm, 11:30 pm, and 4 am. He’s dead, but doesn’t know it yet. If the GS will show up soon, I’ll let him have a go with his new 6.5 Grendel, but he better get here.

I need to give some thought to what a simple shooting bench should look like.

Here's one idea.

I made a portable three legged bench with a plywood top and black iron pipe legs, many years ago. The legs screw into pipe flanges that are mounted to tapered wood blocks so the legs are splayed out for more stability. The legs snap into broom clips on the bottom and there's a handle to carry it broken down.
Couldn't find a picture of the one I built, but here's something similar from the internet.

That’ll work. And it is simple, and I think I have the pipe, and for sure have the plywood.

You need this ....Not sure this is the exact one I have as mine weigh 19lb so very solid but not for toting very far.
Let me know and I will drop one off if you want to try it as I go thru Groesbeck about once a week.

Before I got my death grip tripod I shot dozens of pigs off my ironing board. Left it set up on there with a rear bag most of the time. [Linked Image]

If you want to maximize all axis motion and have the ability to run an arca rail, this kit is worth every penny.
If you get the “complete” kit, you can still use the massive clamp that comes with the BOG.

Take a read here….

I have the bog pod deathgrip, really like it.

A piece of advice here though, I missed a deer this past year because I had my gun clamped in and me not realizing that with the rifle clamped in at 100 yards was causing my dead zero at 100 yards off sand bags to drop almost 1.5”

I missed a head shot on a ugly spike at 100 yards..

Take it to the range and verify your zero off the tripod, it might shift like mine did.

That’s very interesting, and I will have check that out. Thanks.

Right now I’m at the hospital with the wife (she had minor surgery), but i should be home tomorrow. While I’ve been gone, the back area hog is eating corn 6 hours a day, and now I have a huge hog visiting my yard feeder. I’ve got pig shootin bidness to take care of. The tripod should be delivered tonight.
