Just heard they are under mandatory evacuation due to a wildfire that's west of there and heading east.

The fire went from a reported 1500 acres early this afternoon to 5000 acres in a couple hours. We are west of Abilene the fire is about 10 miles south of us. But seems to have stalled its northward movement when it hit the cultivated land. Now moving fast to the south and most of that area is cedar pastures and rough terrain

My parents live in the area and called me. Said they are watching it closely. This chit is getting out of hand. I bet it is a dang democrat that started it.

It’s pretty bad Buddy of mine has a place southwest of Buffalo Gap, somehow it's gotten a decent amount of rain, nothing like last year. Picture from this morning of 2 pregnant does.

It is surreal to have ash fall like snow flakes. We are up by the airport and the fire tankers have been running all day and yesterday too. Second pic is from the 277 Bridge at View of a friend’s house and event venue burning; had another friend lose their house this afternoon too. I have never felt so helpless. It’s defeating. We are hurting for our friends and their sense of loss is unfathomable.

Wildfire Update - May 18, 2022 9:00 pm Texas A&M Forest Service and Texas Intrastate Fire Mutual Aid System (TIFMAS) fire resources responded to several new requests for assistance on wildfires across the state today. There is potential for large wildfires to occur in the Western/Eastern Hill Country and Rolling Plains through Friday including areas near Childress, Vernon, Abilene, Brownwood, Lampasas, San Angelo, Ozona and Fredericksburg. Any new fires in grass and brush vegetation will likely be resistant to control, as underlying drought and critically to extremely dry vegetation combine with 100-degree temperatures and periods of elevated to critical fire weather. Several wildfires exhibited extreme fire behavior caused by dry live and dead vegetation, increased wind speeds and triple digit temperatures. Fire crews experienced high resistance to control with active crown fire in juniper and mesquite vegetation, where the fire transitions from the surface to the canopy. Active Fires: - Dry Branch Fire, Hamilton County - est. 4,000 acres, 15% contained - Buck Creek Fire, Frio County - est. 100 acres, 50% contained - Sandstone Mountain Fire, Llano County - est. 350 acres, 50% contained - Mesquite Heat Fire, Taylor County - est. 5,000 acres, 5% contained - Coconut Fire, Wilbarger County - est. 18,000 acres, 5% contained - Pope 2 Fire, Schleicher County - est. 2,530 acres, 50% contained - Slab Road Fire, Llano County - 57 acres, 90% contained - Johnson Fork Fire, Kimble County - 55 acres, 80% contained - Mayfield Fire, San Saba County - est. 1,250 acres, 40% contained Contained Fires (100%): - Bowman Fire, Dimmit County - 57 acres To view the Texas A&M Forest Service statewide active fire response map, navigate to https://public.tfswildfires.com.For frequent incident updates, visit https://twitter.com/AllHazardsTFS.Additional information and resources can be found at https://tfsweb.tamu.edu/CurrentSituation/.The above information, and information on our Twitter page, reflects fires to which Texas A&M Forest Service is responding. 📷 W. I'm originally from Buffalo Gap, and my best friend still lives in View, so I've been keeping a pretty close eye on it. He told me yesterday they stopped the fire on 1235 at their fence line. It started back towards the Gap yesterday but is petering out. Fingers crossed the fire fighters have this one almost licked. This morning he said it looks like View is now in the clear if the wind doesn't pick up and throw embers past the black. The house he grew up in, and his uncle lives in now is the first driveway past the Vulcan gravel pit on 277 burned to the ground, hardly any charred wood it burned so hot. Total loss, as are the others around it. I have pics but don't feel kosher sharing them right now. Pray for the rain forecast for next week to arrive earlier than expected.
