I have developed a strong attraction to Remington 742's. I am on a mission to collect all 5 calibers they offered. I recently bought a .308 on gun broker, and at the time I thought it was a decent deal. The jack wagon did a really good job at taking pictures, the stock is not nearly as good a shape as I thought it was. I guess if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Granted its over 50 years old, but it looks like someone sanded it down to some degree and most of the checkering is smooth to the touch, even heavily faded in some areas. There is also a crack on both sides of the pistol grip. Anyway, I am not happy with it.

My question is, how close to original are the Boyd's stocks? Will it look correct? They seem to be the only option other than piecing a set together on Ebay that I don't think I will be happy with either. TIA!

As a general comments, I am personally impressed the such wide variety of actions the Boyd's offers for inletting so not surprised it's one of your few options.

I have no idea how much it would look like the original. The shape of the stock is what is it as offered by Boyds. I'd imagine it comes down to selecting the pattern/color. They offer a few different walnut designs that might be close.
I'm sort of a Boyds fanboy. I have one, and installed another for a friend, the at-one for a more common rifle. I absolutely LOVE mine.

I'm a dude who likes long barrels!

I agree with KR about Boyds stocks. If you get one it will fit (might have to do a little sanding) and it will look good, but it may not look original.

I have guided Dustin (Boyd’s Stocks Owner) and discussed this type of thing with him before. If you get in touch with the sales dept and tell them what are trying to do they can make pretty much anything including factory replicas. There is a lot they can do that’s not in the “stock builder” on the website.
