Mowed this evening and the little bitty grasshoppers were solid in front of the mower. I don't recall seeing them this bad this early before. It's been a dry spring and if I remember, moisture has something to do with disrupting their reproductive cycle. I think in 2003 maybe?? they literally stripped everything with any foliage on it. I hope it's not that bad this year.

If you live in the country chickens help, but can't keep up. If you have plants/bushes you want to keep better start spraying now. Them Damm hoppers can eat an entire tree over night. Better get after it.

The way things have been going, it's about time for the plagues to start.

Quail love them. The second cook on Lonesome Dove served them on a regular basis.

Went by my place South of Bowie yesterday. Dozens of the little suckers were on the side of the house. Last time I saw that, they ate up local hay crops and gardens.

Quail love them. The second cook on Lonesome Dove served them on a regular basis. Huh, guess I missed that in the movie.. So, how did the cook, cook the grasshoppers? Did he grill them over an open fire, make a large stew or mix them in with the scrambled eggs? Never seen a recipe for hoppers, will have to look for one.

Back in the early '70's, they were so thick they caused roads to be slippery in spots. Everyone had outdoor TV antennas and it was common for the hoppers to strip the insulation on the lead-in cable. One of the local winos passed out a as borrow ditch and grasshoppers ate a big hole in is T-shirt.
