I was milling a mesquite log and grabbing the thing by the end where the hole was to maneuver it into place not knowing I was being watched very closely.

That entire log would’ve been splattered with holes. I’ve been bit by one of those turds and it wasn’t a fun experience. You got pretty lucky he didn’t tag your hand,,

Are they more venomous than a cottonmouth? By that I mean if I'm bit, am I in more danger?

My understanding is their venom is less toxic than most other venoms like Rattlers, cottonmouth etc...the venom stays in the area of the bite supposedly. Still don't want to test that one out.

my dad cut one in half one time, cutting up a small hollow tree.... cut him right in two with the chainsaw.

Hear ya. Glad you didn't get 'tagged'.

I was building a deer-stand this spring and reached down to grab a piece of scrap wood to level up a ladder leg.

Just as I picked up the piece of wood....I spotted the tail of the snake down in the void of the woodpile.

Fished him out and dispatched it. Generally, I leave them alone when found out in the woods like that but figured this one might stick around and get underneath something else. So it it had to go.

Almost as if they were designed that way.

That was too close. Have yet to find one in a log, but I did see one crawling across one of my logs once. Had four of them on the log deck and caught something moving at a glance. It was a rat snake so I let him be.

Do the different shades represent male and female or just different?

Not gender but there are color variants with most snake species. Most likely what you are seeing is the snake on the left has recently shed while the one on the right is deep in shed and soon loose the old skin.

Usually I would give them a pass, but these were very close to the house and near where my 7 and 9 yo girls play. We also have 2 jagd terrier pups that pounce on anything that moves, so they now reside in the freezer until I get a chance to skin them.
