Dude with gambling and drinking issues offing himself to avoid paying off debts is a coward; 76yo woman having suffered known and medically documented severe depression probably not so much. The utter level of non-compassion on THF at times is ghastly to say the least. Hopefully that perfect world for some keeps on spinning ordeal free.

Over the years, I’ve lost 3 buddies to suicide. The first two were a huge surprise until I realized that they had been depressed over personal issues. The third was my real good friend Pete. I really miss old Pete. He’d come over most afternoons and have a beer. Wouldn’t drink Miller beer. He had a lot of medical issues and money issues, and he had mentioned a couple of times that he might commit suicide at some point when his health got really bad, but I thought I had talked him out of it. I guess I didn’t.
I don’t consider any of those guys to be cowards, and I’m not thinking any less of them. I just wish they hadn’t done it. Losing Pete hurt the worst. He was the kind of friend that would do anything for you. The kind of friend that you can’t replace.
If you want to know how people get to the point of suicide, I can give you an example because I’ve been there. Back in the early 80’s, when I had the brain tumor (non-malignant), the slowly increasing level of pain had gotten to the point that if something wasn’t done, I was going to have to kill myself. The level of pain can’t be described. You come to the realization that you can’t go on like this, and then you realize what you have to do eventually. The doctors found and removed the tumor (most of it), and I’ve had 40 more years of a great life and marriage.
Not my monkeys, not my circus...

A partial quote from a movie:

Anyone who hasn't been in severe pain for a long period of time has no clue what a person is capable of doing. Been there and luckily back surgery worked for me but I suffered greatly for a good while. Had the surgery not corrected it I'm not sure I could have taken it much longer.

Well, I feel like I just witnessed the full spectrum of feelings on depression.

The problem with depression in other people is that you can’t always see it. They might be struggling, while we have no idea of it. And then one day they kill themselves, and it comes as a surprise. You might have done something to help them if you had only known.
One of the friends (a coworker) that I mentioned earlier had told me once that his Dad had killed himself years before. This friend had a good job, a lovely wife and two cute kids, and lots of friends. He was always happy, and told decent jokes. And then one day he took his shotgun out in the woods and put the barrel in his mouth. We were stunned. We all asked why would he do that. Maybe, we wondered, it was something inherited from his father. We’ll never know.

I’ll say mental illness is a joke as well The most ignorant post I've seen on here in a while. The brain is just like any other organ in our body, and sometimes they are ill for a number of reasons. The people that are truly mentally ill, they don't know it. It's hard to watch. My Uncle was a good man, good to me and a hell of a musician. Loved to hunt & fish. Fun to be around, showed no signs at all until he shot himself. Same with a few friends of mine. Never saw it coming. I don't judge.

A friend and co-worker of my Daughter (both RN's....travel nursing) recently took her own life. It really shocked and affected my Daughter who had no idea that her friend had mental struggles. In fact, she commented how much they had in 'common' with respect to their upbringings, interests, etc.... No one would have guessed she suffered from depression. There wasn't anything or reason (known to anyone) in her life that was especially stressful and the event took everyone very much by surprise. As you say, "Never saw it coming".

A little empathy goes a long way in this world. I'm encouraged that most on here seem to have at least a little.
Depression can be like an enemy that you cannot get away from and too many see death as the only escape. I personally don't think a healthy mind rationalizes its own demise; that, to me, is inherently mentally ill. Mental illness/depression is real and it takes a lot to battle through it; sometimes an army is needed to get it beat.

I'm not sure what age to start with, but any "elderly"person struggling with life....if they want out god bless them. A young parent or something like that then I'll not give them a such a pass. I know of a family, good people....wealthy people who had a young teen son that got a concussion playing sports.....they tried to get him all the help they could but one day he took his life after about a year or so of dealing with it.
When someone gets to the stage where they are actually contemplating suicide.....thats a place I cannot really imagine. I have so much to live for personally.
