But there is a big difference there. The perceived value of your home is irrelevant until you decide to sell it. Just because the taxing authority says my house is worth more and wants more taxes because of it, doesn't mean I have any more income to pay the increased taxes. This is why old people or folks on a fixed income lose their homes to greedy tax collectors

I suppose a state income tax would work better for you and bet you can't name a single old person (over 65) who lost their home because of a failure to pay property taxes.

If you are over 65 you do not have to pay the property taxes on your homestead. You cannot have your home foreclosed on for lack of payment. Taxes continue to accrue with interest and penalties and will be collected when the property sells or changes hands through probate, but old folks don't lose their homestead to a delinquent property tax sale. If you are a youngster, then that's a different story.

Age 65 and older in Texas can freeze their school property taxes.

They raised my property value this year almost 200k. So if they do that to everyone then what is the point in selling, where are you going to go? Find a deal somewhere on a fixer upper maybe but once you do the repairs they whack you on that property. A higher value does not really benefit you anything unless you are going to leave the planet. lol

People sell their homes and buy a different one all of the time - maybe they move to another area or downsize but when a home is eventually sold everyone expects to receive the market value for it - Wife and I downsized a couple of years ago - go a great price for the home we sold and built a smaller one and pocketed the gains

In Texas, veterans with a disability rating of: 100% are exempt from all property taxes. 70 to 100% receive a $12,000 property tax exemption. 50 to 69% receive a $10,000 property tax exemption.
