I live near Waxahachie (30 mi. south of Dallas). I have a particular hay/sunflower field I've been running my bird dog on near my house. He bumps up dove, gets a big charge out of it, and it's good exercise and time spent with him. Today, I heard a bob-white calling on an adjacent field. I answered him and he called back. Went on for quite awhile. This is the first time I've seen any evidence of bobs in this area in many years. He was on a fenced cow pasture - in a stand of trees - so I didn't go over. But, still I was amazed. What do you think? Maybe just a pen-raised that got away? Or is this a really good omen? Opinions are welcomed.

They are making a comeback after the drought we've been in. I lived in DeSoto for 45 years and was at one time an avid quail hunter, raised liver and whites for years. Been hunting almost everywhere there in Ellis county you can think of. Just hope that bob finds a mate!! We here in Coleman county are probably on our third hatches of quail. Keep your fingers crossed. There never has been an abundance of quail in that area but maybe God will prove me wrong and you guys will have a bumper crop!!

my grandparents live in Midlothian and last year my grandpa and I went through a patch that had rye, wheat, and a variety of native grass and we jumped a cubby of quail that was in the numbers of about THIRTY BIRDS!

I saw a pair two years ago close to the Desoto Gun club, I thing they were wild birds, but it's hard to say, they verry might as well been pen raised not sure.

I drive that area about everyday and that's all I have seen, seen some pigs in that area as well over the years.

My father in law saw a pair run across the road and heard other cocks calling on his farm south of Palestine about two weeks ago. First time he has noticed multiple birds calling in 15 years.

reeltexan, Are you still running bird dogs in Ellis county? I am searching for a place to train my bird dog. I am near Joe Pool Lake. Please reply if you can help in any way. I belonged to a group that had training grounds in Anna, TX, but the family decided to cancel the lease last year. Thanks, trappertx

With TPWD we are starting our whistle counts from May to June 15. From previous years, more whistles north of Hwy 22 in Navarro and into Ellis County. Running my route south of Hwy 22, I have never heard quail (turkey but no quail). Last quail on my place was 2006-2007. I did almost run over a covey on one of the county roads (south of Hwy 22) a few years back.

I know ranchers north of 22 have heard and are hearing quail.

There is a place in Forreston that releases them for hunts, I wonder if they are coming from there and if so, maybe some will stick and start to reproduce in the wild

Overall, the answer is no. Not all of the state; but most. Heat, ants, habitat, turkeys, pigs, disease, no one knows why.

This year is the most quail I’ve seen in Coleman county since I bought the place 2 1/2 years ago.
My friend found this this weekend, with quail near it.
