Which one is this snake experts. Wife says Eastern but I think it looks more like the pics of westerns.
High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

I believe it is an Eastern Hognose. I had a Western at one time that I had purchased in a pet store and he was very tan colored and didn't seem to have as much of a cobra neck. I also had several wild caught Eastern Hoggies and some resembled this one's coloration.

Looks just like the ones out here so I'll say Western. Gotta love it when they try and look all Cobra and chit. They can Flare the head to look like a rattler also. Handled a ton of them when I was a kid, my favorite snake. It wasn't until years latter I discovered they were venomous. That doesn't mean folks need to kill them, they have very mild venom that seems to only work on toads as far as I can tell.
Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

They are very similar with many color variations….where was it found. Range map is often a better determiner than color…. Regardless, awesome little snakes…

Didn't know there was an Eastern and Western version, we just called them Spreading Adders.

If you found it west of I-35 it must be a Western! Cool pictures

He was in our yard and our place is about as far east in Bexar county as you can get. We are about 8 miles south of IH10 and about 8 miles outside of loop 1604.
Thanks for all the replies.
Damn cool snake for sure. He did puff up and stay that way for a good while. I'd guess he was about 2' long and easily raised his head up off the ground about 8", maybe a bit more. I took him out of the yard and put him in one of the big wood piles we have and sure hope he stays around. This is the first one we've seen there in the 12+ years we've owned the place.
Sadly, we are not seeing any coach whips at all this year or any bull or rat snakes. Happily, we've not seen a rattlesnake yet this year and I only sent 4 to hell last year which is FAR FEWER than the previous 2 years.
High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

Are you HF or LF ? Asking for a friend... LMAO LF my little place isn't big enough to HF or I would. The new 11 acre 'ranchette' owners think they can buy 11 acres and put 2 blinds and feeders on it and kill 2-3 deer a year off of it.
