Seeing the thread about the windmills going up in Fannin County and then I read about Sanderson Farms putting up chicken farms in a residential area near Winona. No question, I would be pissed if turbines were going up next to me, but a putrid chicken farm with hundreds of thousands of birds would be a whole other level. https://www.wfaa.com/article/news/l...287-e9b55b0b-97e6-4ab4-95ff-c500c252339e

That sucks, but Chickens stink. Where are they supposed to farm the chickens? Similar premise to the wind farms going in. Sanderson Farms quietly built it without notifying anyone in the area. If that's legal, that is theie right to do so. I think the issue going forward is that they can't continue to be a bad neighbor with thousands of rotting dead birds and thousands of tons of tons of manure- that needs to be disposed of and handled to minimize the spread of the stench, disease, and bacteria.

Grew up spending time on the family chicken farms in Arkansas. That’s a special smell you’ll never forget. I’ll take wind farms all day long over chickens

There is nothing residential about the area these chicken houses are in.
The chicken houses are pretty much centered in roughly 400 acres surrounded by trees.
The James property mentioned in the article is roughly 1/2 mile from the houses according to Google Earth and OnX. Same for the Callens.
Yep, I'd imagine they get a whiff of the chicken operation when the wind blows so-so. Just like we do from our neighbor who hauls 18-wheeler loads of chicken compost, some of which gets stored on his property and then re-hauled to spread on his customers' pastures for fertilizer. It smells like a dead body.
Imagine if a feedlot went there. It'd smell too. Wind turbines are ugly. Same for solar farms or a big manufacturing facility. Or it could be dozed, divided and covered up with a trailer park. The list goes on of what can happen on neighboring properties. Unfortunately, the only REAL choices are to buy it, move or STFU.
Property rights can be a bitch. But I'll take 'em. Beats the hell out of a HOA.

Nothing residential about 3/4 of section farms but I’d be looking in to putting in a composting plant ASAP, if I lived there. $$$$$$$ in fertilizer right now

Actually chicken farms are quite an operation. One of my sons-in-law runs 8 houses. They are computer controlled for climate. They go through the houses every day to pick up the dead ones. They don't just lay out back and rot, they're composted and the compost is sold as fertilizer. Which is a good thing right now cuz the country is short of fertilizer for our food crops. Those house use propane for heat and have huge air conditioners to keep the birds healthy. Daughter says they compost does smell a little bit when the wind is just right, but it's not the really gross dead smell ya get from dead deer. Bobo ya beat me to it on the fertilizer. They sell compost 2 to 3 times a year.

I know I had a few talks over no “dead pit” for cows, I image they stay all over those chicken houses and any runoff

drive thru springdale arkansas on a hot sumer day. You'll come to hate chickens. Can’t recommend not doing this enough. It might make you swear off eating chicken forever. We have two chickens currently. They’re disgusting animals. Eggs and chicken meat are great and a huge staple of my diet, but seeing them everyday is tough. Just gross and noisy.
I just turned it on . I was looking bird dogs in the butt this morning.

I am absolutely against any of the fairy dust dream of wind and solar energy, so I’d rather deal with the smell of a chicken house any day. F the greenie weenies and their fairy tales.

I’m not saying I like them, but the royalties are pretty damn good. A buddy has 2 on his 200 acres, both on the very south property line, they don’t bother him, and they pay about $15,000 every February & August. Easier than any livestock or crops

They don’t smell that bad… reading this post makes me think there’s a bunch a Nancys on here. I cut up 6 chickens a minute back at Tysons, for 8 hours a day, forty hours per week on the night shift. Then was happy to volunteer for a few hours of overtime each shift washing everything down with a hot water fire hose. It seemed like a fire hose. I’m ok with chicken today and can cook it well. One thing I don’t do is smell it raw out of the package. Brings back memories.
