Hunting season will be a little different for me this year. We're losing our lease of 26 years. I just want to know about public land hunting around the southeast Texas area for Dove.. where to go, where not to and what to do and not do. I would consider going for dove out west but that's not on the table currently as i'd like to stay somewhat closer to home. Thanks.

I lost my place last year (been hunting same place 50 years) also. I tried the AHP and hunted several of the areas around Central Texas and it was a bust. Problem is for the most part is the hiking in. Its hot I'm old and those do not make for fun conditions I chose the nearest tree to beat the heat. Never shot a single round after opening day I went about 10 times there just wasn't any birds. I'll probably do it again but dont have any high hopes.

Public dove is tough. I don't know anything specific to that area, but in general... get as far away from any bigger cities as you can and try to find some spots that aren't so obvious. Anything in the AHP system that is holding birds will be a zoo. There are other public lands that aren't on everybody's radar.
I'd rather have a mediocre hunt in a spot that I have to mostly to myself than fight a crowd in hopes of limits. Been there done that, even with the best plan it usually blows up.

I think you can find hunts out and around Houston for 100ish bucks. Look into El Campo. I have a friend that is a taxidermist out that way but also have a dove/duck outfit. If you want, message me and I can give you his contact info. I went for the first time last year and had so much fun went again. Lot of birds fly right over his pasture heading into town.
