Right now I have an old Leupold VariX-III 4.5-14x40 with the Varmint hunter reticle on it. The fine crosshair makes it great for shooting at 25 or 50 or 75 yards, but it won’t focus down for short range shooting. I don’t do any 100 yard shooting, though the scope and fine crosshairs are good for that, so 14 power on the high end isn’t necessary. In a reasonable price range (under $500 for sure), what’ll give me a fine crosshair and close up focus?

Never mind. I ordered an Athlon Neos 4-12 rimfire scope that’ll focus down to 10 yards. Inexpensive.

This is hands down the best for the money and designed with 22RIMFIRE in mind mainly for target but would be fine for hunting I think. https://www.bushnell.com/match-pro-riflescope.html

I like that it’ll focus up close, which is a bothersome problem with the Leupold that’s on the gun now. And I like that it has BDC dots for 75, 100, and 150 yards. The 75 yard dot is just right for coons under my yard feeder. I figured that I can trust Athlon since I have an Athlon Midas 2.5-15 on the 223 AR, and it’s really nice.
I just spent a ton on the 6.5 Grendel AR and a half ton on the VX5 scope, so for safety sake and to not rile up the wife, I figured $150 wouldn’t put me in the doghouse. Not spending $500 on the Bushnell. No siree…

Got it, installed it, and zeroed it. Nice scope, very clear, and it does focus down to 10 yards. Wasn’t expensive.
Zero it at 50 yards and the BDC dots are supposedly on (if MV is approx 1250 fps) at 75, 100, 125, and 150. The Remington Goldens MV is 1280 fps. The third dot, which is for 125 yards was actually on at 107 yards. I can live with that, as long as I know which dot is for which distance. More shooting and testing to follow, but I’m happy so far.

I can't remember how close my SWFA 3-15 SFP focuses, but the aiming point on it is fantastic

I would suggest the Arken scopes. Not that I have any experiences, but selfishly I'd like more people to try it so we can all see how good they are.
