So I have a question and I freely admit to being a Dinosaur only a few years ago did I buy my first SS and/or synthetic stock rifle. I have a early 80's Remington BDL in win .243 with a Leupold Vari-XIII 3-9x50mm mount on REDFIELD Rings and bases (that's right Redfield). It is in good shape with only one nick on the wood from climbing into a tree stand years ago. You can tell that I care about this gun but I need to sell it so my question is can anyone give me a good idea of a fair market value? The pictures show a Simmons Presidential Scope, but it is Now a Leupold.

Go on Gunbroker and see where they are selling on there. That will tell you where the very top end of the market is.

Guns like this one are hard to sell at a price above what a new off the shelf Tikka T3 would sell for, even though those that know may feel that this Remington is superior.
I have one, and I would say around $1100.00 would be a fair price for what you have. But, the average hunter in the market for a rifle could buy a new Tikka or other similar quality rifle new with comparable scope for the same, maybe less. You have to find someone that knows this rifle and just wants it for what it is. That rifle has a great trigger and is a known to be a good shooter. Mine is, made in 1979.
An unethical shot is one you take, that you know you shouldn't.

If my memory is correct, you have to create an account (it's free) to see the "sold" prices. Naturally, some folks like to greatly inflate the value of their firearms when posting them.

I would suggest you sell the scope and rifle separately.
Rifle alone, $800-$1200 depending on how fast you want to sell. Scope alone, $200-$300 depending on condition etc...

I'll let you come up with a separate value for the scope, although it's not a very good scope and I personally wouldn't pay more than $200 for it (maybe not even $150 because it would mean that I'd have to go through the hassle of selling it). As for the gun itself, I recently sold a Remington 700 BDL .30-06 to a member on here. It was in good condition and made in 2005. I didn't shoot it much anymore and I don't think it was nearly as accurate as my Tikkas, Sakos, or Weatherbys. He haggled with me a bit and I think $700 or $725 was the number we agreed upon with him coming to my house to pick it up. Listings on Gunbroker were going for more, but I didn't want to deal with that.

Yeah, don't look at the asking prices on a bunch of stuff there. Look at ones that have actual bids, and add them to your watch list. After it sells, you can see what it sold for. If I am looking for a firearm, GB is where I go after I have exhausted all my other resources and have resigned to paying top dollar. Don't get me wrong, I have some away with some killer deals from there, but they are rare.

I know a Leupold aint a S&B or a Nightforce, Swaro, etc, but not sure I have ever heard anyone say its not a good scope. That scope will bring a easy $300 if its clean. A 40mm will bring that and that 50 should do better.

Yes, you read that right. I have had several Leupold 3-9s and I think they are inferior quality during low light when you need it most. Once I started using Zeiss and Swaro scopes, I sold all but one of my Leupolds.

Once I started using Zeiss and Swaro scopes, I sold all but one of my Leupolds. I use Zeiss and Swaro as well as Leupold, Weaver, Nikon, Vortex, Simmons, and Redfield and probably one or two other brands I missed. So far I have only seen one scope that wouldnt get the job done during legal shooting hours and that was a vintage Redfield. No doubt the Ziess and Swaros have better glass and they have a bigger price tag as well. I wont lump the others in the inferior catagory based on glass alone though. Everyone has their own opinions though.

To clarify, it's all relative to cost. Yes, I would say that's a fine scope for $200. But, not a "good scope" overall. And it doesn't meet the old rule of thumb of spending at least half of what your rifle is worth on the scope (i.e. it's not a scope worthy of being on that rifle). FWIW, I just went on Ebay and a VXII 3-9X40 just now sold for $169, so I don't think my valuation of $200 is too far off for a 50mm. Ebay

Don’t let nobody low ball you and I would not let this one go for anything. Might even put the old Simmons back on there to keep it vintage lol. Cool rifle you’ve got there, I would not take ten tikkas for one rifle like that.

Agreed. The best glass in the world doesn't make up for poor shooting skills.

And quite frankly, I'm shocked that there is even a bidder willing to spend that much on that scope (unless it's an attempt to get the bidding up). I don't see a single Leupold Vari-XIII 3-9x50mm listed on Ebay or Gunbroker, so I'm thinking the OP might actually have a VX-II.

Classic Leupolds and classic Remington 700s are a natural pair; I think someone wanting buying this rifle would be someone wanting something to hearken back to the hunting rifles of yesteryear.

They never even offered a 3x9x50 that I recall in the 3 lineup. When he said it was a Vari X III I knew right away it was going to be a 3.5x10 and not a 3x9. So part of his scope description is not correct. Its either the 3x9 part that is wrong or the Vari X III part that is wrong. Just a picture of the scope would tell me what it was without even being able to see the writing on it. Thin gold ring is a 2. Thick gold ring is a 3. Leupold shield is a 3 and "Leupold" spelled out is a 2.

Best bet just hang on to that old Remington for your family. That rifle was made back when Remington made them for more than one generation. You will probably not get the total value of the rifle, which will just increase in the future.

That gun brings back memories, not real good ones LOL. Almost got shot with one that looked just like that, except it had a Bushnell scope. It was many years back but if you look real hard I've still got powder in my hand from the event

Find a price with the VX3 and send me a number. That is a classic riffle but the rings are too high. I will fix that.
