Shot an 80lb sow this weekend, ended up dumping her in the bone pit after skinning her out. Not sure what she had wrong with her. The fat under her hide was pink with red spots, mainly down her back and rump. Anyone seen this before?

Reminds me of that Blue pig shot in California. Fat was all blue.

Looks like it could be blood splash, aka Ecchymosis, often stress-related intense short term high blood pressure resulting in capillary bleeding. This sometimes occurs with hogs improperly stunned for slaughter, for example. It may be associated with bruising.

Something like this, probably from some kind of wound or could even possibly, I'm not a CSI person, be from some trauma from your killing shot. I've seen deer with similar "blood splash" as I am learning that term just now, in the capillaries in their hides when they were not shot well (by me I ain't judging), usually towards the spine. It probably was fine, but no need to risk it either if you weren't comfortable with it.

I once shot a buck that had a big hole in his hip oozing green stuff. Probably from a fight. I sure dumped that one even though I guess I could have cut around it.

Based on the discussion here, it very well may have been okay. But, no one in their right mind is going to judge you for shooting a hog and leaving it for scavengers. Just go out and get another one more to your liking.

I have two unwritten rules:
1.
2.

This is all I ever do. Unless the THF resident chef is visiting. grin He could make shoe leather taste like filet mignon.

It was an earhole broadside shot so she didn't have any trauma in those areas. I did notice she had 5 babies near her after the shot so I assumed she was healthy but you never know. Like yall said there are plenty others out here.
