I love hunting the mountains but never understood the romance for those wishing to return to that life style.

That’s the best way to describe it, I love being there for a week at a time

Something to be said for the solitude.

I don’t know how long it would take me to get tired of it now but a week might not be long enough

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

If I could convince my wife to go with me I would damn sure try. I’m already working myself to death and living like a homeless bum on the road to keep my family comfortable at home, lol. Trucking isn’t all driving. I unload a 53 foot trailer 3 times a week, one box at a time no pallets or fork lifts, retainers or etc. Spend plenty of time doing it 30 to 40 below weather, too. But realistically, we would probably starve or freeze without some modern convenience though.

I think it would be ideal, to live way out some place like that but keep a big rig and work at least enough to keep it insured and fueled up, so you could get out there and run it hard for a few months to keep your coffers filled. I love isolation though. Half the reason I drive a truck.

Nobody is truly isolated these days anyway, not with the internet.

Whatever T F's wrong with the site, I had a lengthy post about never
hearing of Beaver Dick, and how my maternal great great great ( how
ever many greats he was) grandfather that came to the R.O.T. from
england in the early 1800's, and how similar his life's path was
It got lost in cyberspace somehow

Anyway
This is him

I used to want to move to Alaska to live, but I
can't handle the cold or the mountain altitude

Not much of any place left to go to escape the
urbanites and yuppies

There’s plenty in West Texas, but not much water or anything else in those areas, lol. There is some pretty remote country in Appalachia though. Plenty of water out there too.

Appalachian country is disappearing fast though. Nashville is experiencing a surge much like Dallas did, sprawling out into the country

Loving County is a county in the U.S. state of Texas. With a population of 64 per the 2020 census, it is the least-populous county in the contiguous United States

I just googled it, looked pretty well subdivided into “ranchettes” until I zoomed in. Nothing but a grid of dirt roads with oil derricks at the corners lol.

They got a 2,000 acre reservoir, to boot! You can hunt waterfowl on the eastern side of the lake. I bet land is cheap too, buy a “ranch” put a trailer, What more do you need?

Great story

Thanks for sharing

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

After the M0untain man was the story of Hugh Glass. Glass was left for dead by a young Jim Bridger and a man Fitch. Movie was made a year or two ago starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Interesting story which differs a bit from the movie.

I have read a lot of the mountain men journals over the years, but I have never heard of Beaver Dick.
Maybe he was mentioned and I don’t remember.
I will be ready about him now.
