I finished my first flint point that I’ll shoot this fall. It weighs in at 122.4 grains. I shoot a 68” longbow. I’ll be setting them in full length 23/64” wood shafts that are spined at 80-85lbs. I chose a straight stem because Texas archery regulations specify that your point can’t have barbs. The typical arrowhead usually has ears that sweep down and out. In conversations with TPWD Law Enforcement Division, those would qualify as barbs. Hence the straight stem. The tip looks rounded in the pics but it’s plenty sharp. Eleven more (I need 3 for practice) and I’m good to go. I accidentally kind of fluted one side.

Those are awesome!

Any ideas on how they fly?

I haven’t shot these yet. The only difference between these and the ones I’ve been shooting for about 9 years is that I took the ears off. It lightened them up a bit but I don’t shoot over 20 yards and I shoot instinctively. I carry some 125 grain Wendell Woodsman arrows for pigs. They all shoot about the same.

What are you going to shoot with them? Deer?

I’ve heard of some hunters using stone points with good success

Do you thin that flute will cause it to be less balanced and not shoot as good as if the sides matched? Never shot stone points so don't know. Looking forward to progress reports and pics of kills in the future.

It won’t matter. I’ve hit rocks with practice points before and knock pieces out of them and they fly the same. At least at 20 yards they do and that’s usually all I shoot at targets (leaves on the ground) and I’ve never shot a deer farther than 20 yards.

Yes, deer. My arrows are heavy and don’t fly real fast but they hit like a bowling ball. Well, maybe not that hard but they haven’t slowed down at my 20 yard max range to shoot a deer.

from what I've seen using trad equipment ( i know its not the same as primitive equipment ) you can get away with things that wouldn't fly ( no pun intended ) with higher performing compound gear.

I've shot arrows that have 3 vanes 2 vanes, 2 1/2 vanes, and no vanes and within 20 yards all fly pretty much to the same place. I don't think that a flute on one side and not on the other is gonna have a noticeable effect on POI

The arrow head looks great! Keep us posted when you get a chance to hunt with it.

It’s a 68” longbow made by Dan Quillian shortly before he passed away. Young people never heard of him but back in Fred Bear’s day, he was one of the premier bowyers in America.

I am headed to Africa for the first time in September and was conversing with a friend who has made multiple trips. Asked him if he thought my go to broadhead was adequate or should I invest in some Silver flames, etc. He said the guy who headed up the trip kills them with sharp rocks
We argue fixed, mechanical, foc and so on. Yeah I use a longbow or recurve. I may even sling a wood arrow. But the guys shooting wood bows with primitive arrows and heads? Those are the real deal.

I work hard, drink a little and hunt when I can.

Have TPWD brush up on the new regulations.

There are no such restrictions any longer. In the past yes. Non-barbed, two cutting edges, minimum width upon impact 7/8" of an inch.

All has been revised. Make your points however you wish.

https://tpwd.texas.gov/regulations/outdoor-annual/regs/season-types/archery-only

Projectiles (Arrows and Crossbow Bolts)

While hunting game animals and game birds, a projectile may not be poisoned, drugged, or explosive.

When used to hunt turkey and all game animals other than squirrels, a projectile must be equipped with a broadhead hunting point. An archer may have arrows/bolts with field, target, or judo points in the quiver with the broadhead hunting points.
There are no restrictions or minimum requirements on arrow or bolt lengths, arrow material, arrow weight, lighted nocks, broadhead lengths or diameter, number of cutting edges, broadhead material, or mechanical broadheads.

I've had to give up my traditional bow hunting (after 50 years) due to a rotator cuff issue. So my LongBows, arrows, and equipment will be passed on to my nephews.

I've killed dozens of deer and hogs over the years with knapped points and they are VERY effective. Like you, I prefer a full length and heavy arrow. Most of mine well over 700 grains. I like to make mine from hard rock maple when I can find good shafts. They are heavy and quite durable.

Points....I don't care about. I can knock out a decent hunting point in 30 minutes. It can take days to make a good arrow shaft.

Keep after them! Best of luck.

flintknapper after looking at your hunting points I have bought a few tools and set a goal to kill a deer/bear on my lease in Arkansas this year with a point and shaft that I make myself. I know there is plenty of videos on youtube and books out there but do you have any basic tips for a newbie to knapping and mounting handmade points?
