I have a mystery. One of two pig pipe has came up missing. To stake them down I used a T post cut in half so it was about 30 some old inches long. The post was drove into the ground leaving 24 or 28” sticking up. The pipes are attached to a chain/ swivel/ ring combination that I have used for years. We came up with 3 possibilities maybe 4, as to what happened to the pipe. First possibility is it was taken, but being it is in possibility the roughest terrain in the state and at least a 2 miles from a public road, that’s probably not likely the case. 2nd is maybe a big Racoon worked it off the stake and the pigs rolled it off into the gully and it’s behind a rock out of site. 3rd is a bid 300lb+ boar was rooting next to the stake and caught the ring on the chain on a tusk and lifted it off the stake and hauled it off up or down the mountain out of sight. Finally the 4th is the possibility of aliens inspecting our crude technology and taking my pig pipe to put in a museum in another galaxy somewhere?
What say you?

LOL, my guess is that something broke because the hogs were working it or a regular hog simply lifted off the ring from the stake and the hog(s) rolled it away. One of the problems with pig pipes is that is something that happens with fair regularity to them. The pigs will rull them literally hundreds of yards until they are out of corn or get stuck. I had one buddy with a large field that found his over 400 yards away at the far treeline. Another buddy's got rolled over 150 yards until it went down in a ravine.

It doesn't take a 300 lb boar hooking a tusk through the ring to life the ring off the stake. A much smaller hog can lift the ring with its nose/mouth and work it up and off.

A raccoon most likely did not steal your pig pipe.

I would vote for possibility #3. Was the missing pipe tethered to the top half or the bottom half of the tee post? If it was the top half, it is not much more than a stake in the ground and hardworking porkers can loosen if over a short period of time. Like DNS said, the piggies will keep rolling the pipes until the corn is all gone, or they get it jammed up somehow. And depending upon the terrain and how full the pipe was when it came loose, it could be a long way from home! It sounds like the pipe was in rough-arse country, so chance are, unless it went over that cliff, you should be able to find it within a hundred yards or so. I've recovered a bunch of them over the years, and I look for 'em just like I do a wounded animal. Tie off pieces of rag or toilet paper and begin making increasingly larger circles, marking as you go. Chances are it got pushed into some kind of nasty thicket that you may not be interested in digging in to! Let us know if and when you find it and where it was, distance-wise from its launch point.

I am thinking option 4 sounds the most plausible.

I like option 4 too, but I had a pig barrel (15 Gal) get taken over a 100 yards into a thick swamp before the pigs finally gave up on it. They actually broke the ring by pushing on it so hard instead of rolling it.

Hmmmm, you drove it in all of 2 to 6 inches? Cannot fathom the possibility of 2 inches. Am I missing something here?

I found mine in a thicket about 75 yards away from where it was staked down. The hogs broke the swivel at the post kicked it through a barbed wire fence before it emptied in the thicket.

Some years back the hogs wrapped the pipe feeder around the T-post until the plastic PVC cap broke. They then pushed it downhill over 100 yards until it became snagged in some brush.

So I was missing something - the stake was still there and only the pipe vanished?

Wouldn't hogs use that stake to rub on? Maybe that action led to a mechanical failure on the part of whatever was attaching the pipe to the stake.

I’ve had them push feeders over that had at least 150-200 lbs of corn in them and roll a 55 gal drum 50 yds through thick brush and trees. Piece of PVC staked to a 2’ piece of t post, no problem. As DNS said, it wouldn’t take a large pig to do that.

Stick of 4”-6” PVC capped at either end. One end is chained to a tpost, tree, etc. Drill some 1/2” holes in it and fill it with corn.

You need a swivel on one end. Lots of examples on Youtube.

And they make crop circles around your stake.
Make sure to put some rocks in there with the corn that are too big to exit thru the 1/2" holes....they will roll them long after the last kernel of corn comes out trying to get the rocks out!

Yep, stake was in the ground solid. Has anyone priced scheduled 40 lately. The chain and couplings are all heavy duty galvanized materials. That pig pipe is about $150 to replace now. I haven’t been able to get back down there to look for it, but I plan on it.
