Hey guys pretty new to this forum! I’m a highschool kid who has grown up hunting basically his whole life and hunting about everything but I’m going off to college in Bryan Texas area and was wondering if anyone knows the hunting landscape there and if it’s decent hunting! Any replies help!

Sounds like fun. It’s been 25 years since I was there, but there was drawing to try and get one of about 30 blinds on lake Somerville. I got lucky and was drawn pretty early. It worked out well and we shot birds. Good luck!

Could you tell us generally where you are from and what you are looking to hunt?

Texas is a bit different than other states regarding places you can hunt.

To be determined

I have a place 30 minute North of Bryan. It's pretty good hunting for deer and pigs. There are some public dove hunting lands around but they are hit and miss. Some years are good. Here is the public land link https://tpwd.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=c9788957300943559f7b49206e8ef153

It can be very good hunting in the area, but will be VERY tough to find a place to hunt.
Good Luck!

Yep that’s what I’m trying to do! Do you recommend getting a lease or trying to hunt public or I was also thinking about maybe asking a farmer for me to help him when he needs it if i could hunt his land how do you think that conversation would go?

Sounds like you are going to start off at Blinn, if you are in Bryan. Tough around here to find something close. I have been here for over 40 years. Met quite a few folks here. Many have land and do hunt. Can only recall one time that I was invited to hunt. Much of the land is leased. There are some high fence places that will sell hunts. There will be some like minded folks there at school. Some will have or know of a place. Those will be some good folks to make friends with. The opportunities might arise.
Good luck and have fun..

It's getting built up around the area too. It's getting harder to find anything.

That's no joke!!! It use to be a good drive down Wellborn Rd. to get close to where I live. Not any more.

Yep this was also another plan I had but I was wondering how are people such as farmers when you ask if you could hog hunt on their land? Are they usually pretty happy about it or not.

Your best bet is probably to make friends with other freshmen who are locals and get invited to hunt their land.

Not to discourage you but in Robertson county it's difficult to get farmland to hunt. Lot of the people are private and don't want traffic on their land.

That's going to be hit and miss. I got lucky when I moved here to be able to get know a rancher up in Robertson county. He would call and asked when my next day off was. I would help him with his cattle, roadwork and hay. Was able to hunt some - when his hunters were not there.

The farmers and ranchers around here are good folks but are also careful when it comes to strangers hunting there place. Many have their places leased, and some only let their kids hunt. Just need to be patient.

There is always the Sam Hiuston National Forest about an hour or so to the East in the Huntsville area.

Contact Texas Parks and Wildlife Dept. about waterfowl hunting at the Lake Somerville state parks like Nails Creek. and best of luck to you.

Hunting can be had, but it really is dependent on water availability for ducks and such.

Of course, once you get plugged into college life...other things compete for your available free time...like parties and girls.

Best of luck and let us know how you do.

I was at this ranch a couple of weeks ago and they do offer nice hunts from hogs to upland bird, and ducks.
