What experience do you guys have with planting Iron and Clay Peas (with NO fertilizer).
13-13-13 fertilizer is running almost $25 per bag!!!

to over simplify, I believe You will get less than 1/3 of what you would have gotten with 100lbs per acre of 13-13-13.

If you correctly inoculate the seed before planting they will do great. Much cheaper than spreading nitrogen fertilizer!
Being a legume, they can ADD nitrogen to the soil (including getting all they need) if inoculated with the correct rhizobium inoculant - https://www.trueleafmarket.com/prod...tils?_pos=3&_sid=696305518&_ss=r

No experience with Iron & Clay, but several seasons of experience with LabLab, which is also a legume. Discovered that any annual rainfall areas less than 35" are risky for legumes. I also discovered that the grass and nightshade loved the fertilizer and overgrew my legume crops.

Fertilizer was noticeably cheaper by the ton (vs bags). Was able to borrow fertilizer spreaders from the fertilizer suppliers. I chose fertilizer based on TAMU soil reports overlaid with type of crop. As you might guess, TAMU fertilizer recommendations did not require nitrogen

I also discovered that the deer would kill my legumes without protection (electrical, wire or chemical fence)

After wasting a lot of time and money over three seasons, I stopped planting legumes in the Spring (in favor of protein/corn during stress period of late summer).

Oats have been good to me in the Fall with and without fertilizer

I've decided NOT to plant Iron and Clay Peas and instead go HEAVY feeding protein. I now have (3) hog panel penned feed areas with a protein feeder + corn slinger going and will soon add (2) more hog panel penned protein feeding stations on the other side of my property + corn on only 170 acres. I'll have all the deer within a 1/2 mile of my property coming over for a meal over the next 4 months. So far I have about 7-9 bucks feeding each day and they look great for this time of year. I have noticed the does are not running with their usual lady crowd. They have broken up ready to give birth. The does I am seeing are HUGE.
