Kmart is shedding another one of its brick-and-mortar department stores, leaving only a handful left in the country.

Its Avenel, New Jersey, store is slated to close its doors for good on Saturday. Employees at the Kmart location found out just last month that it would close.

Kmart, now owned by Transformco, once had over 2,000 locations nationwide. Now, after this next closure, it will be down to just three in the continental U.S. and a handful of stores elsewhere, according to multiple reports.

Story

I remember when we only had an old Gibson's and they built us a really nice big Kmart. sad to see.

I barely remember Kmarts as a young kid, but obviously Walmart and Target beat them at the brick and mortar concept. And Amazon probably destroyed them 15 years ago.

Kmart and Gibson's used to have a lot of decent quality goods
in addition to their own store brand cheaper stuff.
Bought lots of hunting and fishing goods from both places
before the wally world stores came here and pushed them out.

The local Gibson's had big cabinets with all the Coleman stove
and lantern replacement parts, and a Garcia bin with all the
replacement parts, drag washers, brake blocks, screws, etc.
Their inventory was pretty much stuff that could be used in
this region, and not things for places a thousand miles away

I worked at Kmart my last year in college. One Friday night they told me I was responsible for the Blue Light Special because our regular lady was off. Trust me when I say that is not my thing!! This particular Friday night it was for some toy monkey that had a lot of musical sounds, tamborine, drums, trumpet, etc... I tried to get out of it, but they were intent on me doing it. They even wrote me a script. I got on the loudspeaker and started talking about that monkey and just threw the script down and started off on my own tangent of what it was....(basically a POS). by the time I got done with that sh#$show, I was assured to never be asked to speak on the loudspeaker again!!

We used to get the sleeve of ham sandwiches, they were something like 4 for a dollar.

They were actually good too, and the bread was fresh

Yep, and a treat for us. Had to add condiments but they were tasty.

The ones around here used to be decent. Towards the end they were just nasty dollar stores that didn't have anything in stock. Plus you felt like you had to dump everything in in a gallon of bleach to disinfect it when you got it home.

Thanks,
Rich

I had that feeling as kid in the early 90's.

Pretty wild. They were the premier dept store in Abilene growing up.

I still frequent the Gibson's in Weatherford, the gun counter in the back and the pallets of grass hold up the rest of the store I think.
