That’s sad, I can’t imagine the amount of financial loss from that many deer.

The article stated that not only would they lose the value of the deer slaughtered, but that TPWD would then bill them for the salaries of the people doing the slaughtering, travel and meal costs, and costs to dispose of the carcasses. Damn!

Depopulation is how they want to fight the CWD issue even on public property.

9/500 tested positive. I wonder what the rate is in the wild?

Bunch of bs. Test all, kill the tag number deer that test positive. Test every other month for 3 months. They should have it cleared by then and he keeps most of his herd. Has to be something similar to that idea that will work.

Testing is done using material from the brain stem. I'm not aware if live critter testing is possible.
The Canadian wildlife folks shot deer in the Provost Alberta region from helicopters, lifted the carcasses and buried them in a VERY LARGE hole.

Back when I was living in CO they wanted to seriously thin the mule deer around Ft Collins CO which is the area they first found CWD. They issued unlimited tags for something like $7 each and allowed you to hunt one of the state parks. I bought 3 tags and took 3 does off the park. It really wasn't much of a hunt since the park deer had not been hunted. After taking the deer you had to turn in the heads to get tested and they suggested you not eat the meat until the results were in. All 3 of the deer I took were negative for CWD. My brother took 2 does and a buddy of mine took 3 and not one was positive. They didn't control the disease but they sure as hell thinned deer in that area.

I'll never take part in anything like that again. It was pretty much a slaughter. Not pretty and I'm ashamed I took part but I was a lot younger then and had more "blood lust" than I do now.

The breading facility I looked at buying the native deer were able to come right up to the fence containing the "caged live stock." I think TPW are concerned with the disease spreading that way. !@#$ I could never participate in something like that though.

I didn’t either but I interpreted the article as live deer were tested.

There is now live testing, this is why it’s BS they are eliminating the entire herd.

It’s an opportunity to see it’s spread by soil or not.

There was live testing when they eliminated the medina herd but they wouldn’t approve it, now using same test to justify eliminating this herd. What a joke

I read up on it and you are correct a test was developed for live tissue sampling. I collected samples with our county biologist but only on dead critters. We never discussed the live test, I guess, because we were sampling harvested deer on MLD properties. Or, perhaps the live test wasn't available at the time. My understanding was the markers were only found in brain matter.

No doubt CWD is a bad deal. But I think the biggest threat to Texas deer is TPWD.

TPWD, aren’t these the same guys who thought it was a good idea to start a “controlled” burn in Bastrop awhile back?

pretty sure hunting in general would be better off without deer breeding farms.

I agree with TPWD, the deer farmers need to held accountable.

Sad, but unfortunately, there is risk in every business and the owners knew and have known the risk.

I don't know anything about the disease..but why not use the farm for research and development. I just feel like it is a wast to kill the heard when so much could be learned from a heard with CWD. All the research would be lost...why not pay the rancher to research his heard since they know they have a lab right here on the ranch. How much do P&W know about the disease? What will be accomplished by killing all the animals...not to spread the disease?...how do they know the disease hasn't traveled outside the pen? So much information could be learned. If we don't take this chance to learn, all is lost..that's not how to learn if we don't research areas that is contaminated. Do they now how the disease spreads? Why don't they know more about how to detect the disease other than complete destruction of the whole area. If they continue to destroy evidence and facts that could be learned then how are they ever going to grow the knowledge...a total waste to destroy this heard. I am appalled to learn the research team is destroying evidence that could save lives.
