I'm seeking a hog bait that deer and horses won't eat. I've tried a couple recipes from the internet for "sour corn" which is basically fermented corn with some strawberry soda and jello added but maybe I haven't let it ferment long enough because it seems like everyone but the hogs eat it. Does anyone have a good recipe that only hogs will be attracted to and eat?

use burnt oil on an old towel, wrap it around the base of a tree or post. The hogs at my place come up and rub on it when they're passing through.

Sometimes it's hard being me! But somebody has to do it.

Only problem with this is the hogs start tasting like diesel and not in a good way.

I've had good luck with the same soured corn you described. It does take a while for it too get good and ripe. Warmer weather speeds up the process. I always put mine in a 5 gallon bucket with a lid on it, and set it in the sun.

"Usually" should have been written in there. Deer, raccoons, horses, cattle, etc. don't read the forums. Sometimes they definitely will eat corn that has been denatured with diesel fuel.

Remember, that diesel is poisonous. I would definite not suggest you put out bail tainted with a toxic substance in hopes that your horses won't eat it. Diesel is not considered highly toxic, but it can cause issues if ingested.

Setting up a tree as a rubbing spot as hook_in_line suggested is probably a much better idea for your situation.

In reality, I don't think such a thing exists. I tried the soured corn, and I've tried diesel corn. Nothing else ate the corn, but neither did the pigs.

To clarify the method pouring a quart of diesel on 500lbs of corn in a corn feeder which only throws a couple pounds a day maybe is not a problem.

Diesel is organic it comes from mother earth wink

In that sense, virtually everything on the planet is organic.

I have two unwritten rules:
1.
2.

What about one of those pig pipes? The PVC with caps and small holes in it and the pigs push it around to get corn to fall out of the holes. I don’t know if deer or horses would push it around and get the corn out or not.

Deer will occasionally push around pig pipes. I don't think that is really common, but it does happen. I would not be surprised if some cows figured out how to do it as well. Not sure about horse behavior, but would not be surprised. Cattle and horses can learn to work latches on fences so figuring out a pig pipe would not be a stretch.

Sour corn
I have made it a few times and used with success.
Is it typical for the corn not to be soaked through?
I let it soak for four weeks in my garage in Arizona, warm, and kernels were dry on the inside. I was thinking of using cracked corn for flavor and just add dry whole kernels on site for crunch.

Add 1 pack of yeast and any old beer and cola and make sure to add liquid as it ferments.

This. When putting it out, make sure to throw the liquid up into trees so the wind spreads the smell better. Brings them in from a ways off. Used to have it sit out for 6 weeks in the Texas sun, then it was ready.

Some good advice here.

So, I was wondering about live oak nuts because I've heard pigs love those. My mature tree drops a ton of these in the fall.
